  • does this gelding have dp?!

  • Both parents are chocolate palomino meaning that they both have at least one copy of DP. They both have a 50/50 chance to pass it on.

If both parents just had one copy:
    DP/n and DP/n
    your horse could have:
25% chance no DP at all
    25% chance HZ DP
50% chance one copy of DP
(so all together, 75% chance of carrying at least one copy of DP)

    Edit to add:
I'm having trouble finding what happens to DP if the horse is a double dilute/cremello/perlino..?

  • Found this one and another that had CcrCprl and had "Chocolate" in their name. I don't know what happens with double Ccr though...

  • A CcrCcr produces a double dilution, cremello. It looks very similar to white though, depending on the base color, there may be some darker sheen!
  • Cream is the strongest of the dilution genes, so a homozygous cream horse will probably not show even homozygous DP to any great extent.

  • @waldgraf a double dilute is not always a cremello. Depending on the base color the horse can be either cremello, perlino, or smokey cream.

And yes, DP doesnt show on double dilutes. Its there but you cant see it.

  • Even homozygous DP doesn't darken a cremello much and doesn't change the color name. The homozygous creme dilutes too much for anything to effect it.

  • How do you know Glowing Penumbra has homozygous DP when it can't be tested for and he's a foundation so no chocolate parents to give you a clue?

Edit: It was a HH or you gmo'd him?
  • I GMed Glowing Penumbra with homozygous DP. Vanilla Fudge is a Dark Chocolate RS HH (so het DP), who got an extra cream. I wanted more chocolate palominos, so like my DP cremellos to cross with my pasture full of dark chestnut mares.
