Is she DP?
  • Hello, I bred this filly yesterday from the pasture and just wondered if she is DP? I still don't understand the gene much but I know it produces darker colours, she is also a liver chestnut. Thanks

  • If the gene test named her a Liver Chestnut, then she definitely has DP. From looking at her, I would say that she is homozygous for both Ssty and DP.

    Congratulations.

  • Yep. Any horse that has "liver" or "chocolate" in their color test carries DP.
As Sandy said I would say shes homozygous

  • A short discussion of DP and Sooty, the darkening genes.

There are two genes that darken horses' coats. Sooty (Ssty) and Dense Pheomelanin (DP). Sooty works by mixing black hair into the coat from the top down. Dense Pheomelanin works by increasing the red pigment in the hair, making it darker than it would otherwise be.

Sooty is a normal, complete dominant gene. If a horse has one copy of it, it will show. DP is more subtle.

In Chestnut horses, it takes 3 copies of darkening genes to make a Liver Chestnut. A horse can inherit two copies of Ssty (1 from each parent) and one DP, or 1 copy of Ssty and two of DP. In the game, horses that are homozygous for both like your filly, appear black.

Horses of any base color can be carrying DP. There is no special name for horses with other base coats that have three copies of the darkening gene. It can be a bit harder to see in Bays, and has no effect on black horses, because they have no red pigment in their hair. Chestnut horses with dilution genes will also show the effect of DP. You can find Liver Red Duns, in the game, for instance. A palomino horse that inherits three copies of the darkening genes will be a Chocolate Palomino. One that inherits four copies will be very dark indeed.

  • @Sandy - not to be nitpicky at all, but Sooty is an incomplete dominant. One copy darkens the horse, two copies darkens the horse even more. Cream works the same way. Agouti is a complete dominant - a horse with one copy looks just like a horse with two copies. Again, not trying to be obnoxious just want the terminology to be consistent.
  • Thanks, Denalidom, for that correction. I hadn't remembered that homozygous Ssty was darker than heterozygous Ssty. I appreciate all the help I can get in mastering the ins and outs of all the color genes.
