Is he a bad breeder or am I?
  • Or is it just the luck of the draw? I have a Trick Or Treat stallion that I love, he's het for both sabino and frame, which are two genes I've been trying really hard to start lines for, and I love how the sabino and frame look together. So far this boy has thrown beautiful colored foals that get papered the way 2nd Gens should be (Red for fillies and B for colts) as well as foals with high PT scores. Not a single one of his foals have passed SBA, even though I try to match him with mares with papering that I think are level to his so I'm not breeding him to mares that are worse or far better than him. Also, almost every single foal is inconsistent. Is he just not as good of a producer as I want him to be or am I choosing the wrong mares to breed him to? Is it something I am doing or is it the horse?

Also small side note, it says he was bred 8 times with only four foals. Two I didn't check for lethal genes (I haven't tried breeding with lethal genes too much so I am inexperienced when it comes to that) and the other two I just got instantly frustrated and sold them directly back to the game. But they both had PT scores of at least 10 but were inconsistent and didn't pass SBA.

  • First things first, do any of these mares have a pasture bonus?

  • Three of the foals are out of my mares, who should have been in the pasture for 30+ days, or at least very close to that. I am not sure about that mare that I found for public brood, that was me trying to see if it was the stallion or if it was my mares but the foal still ended up being inconsistent and gelded.
  • But in general I am unsure how to check if a mare has a pasture bonus or not and how I would know for sure about that?
  • If under her name and info while looking at her in pasture, if it says "30+", she has a full pasture bonus!

  • Mares only have the pasture bonus while they are still in the pasture. The INSTANT they come up into a barn stall, they lose the bonus, so only the mares that you own, and who stay in the pasture will get the bonus. The stallion has to go to the mare in the pasture.

  • So then do I need the pasture bonus to get consistent foals out of him? Should I make him a stallion I put out to pasture? Or should I send him to auction or sell him to someone who needs a horse who makes pretty show ponies?
  • He really hasn't had many foals. He is a B papered stallion and three of the mares are Yellow papered. The only one that I would really count is the Kings Ransom mares foal, and it was consistent.

  • I just put my stallions in the pastures for the couple minutes it takes to breed the mares that live there year round. Then the boys come back up to the barn to live for the rest of the year.

  • Every intact horse has a hidden range of possible contributions to a foal's breeding ability (showing ability as well, but that's a separate number). When you breed a mare and stallion together, random numbers are generated from the mare,s range and the stallion's range. Then some unknown mathematical formula is applied to get the resulting breeding ability for the foal. Only Ammit knows the exact numbers. These numbers are random, meaning there is no predicting what the result will be. Just as, when you're tossing a penny and tallying the heads or tails, you can easily have a considerable number of either one in a row, because the odds of either turning up is 50/50 for every throw. The same truth holds true for where the foal's inheritance of ability will fall. You've probably just had a run of bad luck. Inconsistent horses are more likely to have inconsistent foals, but they can also have them that test consistent. Consistent parents are more likely to have consistent foals, but there's enough uncertainty in the formula that two consistent horses can and do sometimes have inconsistent foals.

  • Oh yeah, like Confluence says, if he's an ExPro, he's very unlikely to get intact foals unless he's bred to other foundation ExPros or 2nd gen Red mares. :) But yeah, 8 foals isn't a whole lot to go off of anyway.
  • He's a Rank Special so you know he's a good breeder. Like the others have said, 8 foals isn't really a lot so you've likely just had bad luck.
