Silly question here, but how do you breed for snowflake? (I want one! LOL)
-
Snowflake is a rare, but open gene that can occur spontaneously in any created horse very occasionally. It is part of the appaloosa complex and gives small white spots, like tiny snowflakes when an appaloosa horse carries two snowflake genes.
So, both the sire and dam of a foal have to carry snowflake (which doesn't show up in the gene test) and pass it on to their offspring, and at least one of them has to pass on the Llp gene. I have seen posts about snowflake foals where the sire was a snowflake appaloosa and the dam was did not carry Llp at all.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Thank you so much for the explanation.
I will start watching for this oneThanked by 1SandycreekFarm -
I'd look at this guy as your culprit. He's on both sides of the foal's pedigree. Breed him to some hom snowflake mares and see what you get. Of course it could've come from somewhere else.

Thats my first snow flake foal ever and was quite unexpected. Since I now know the mare carries snowflake I can pull eggs next season and then could try her with him to see if he's the snowflake carrier. Since the stud is also a snow flake I'll be testing him out on all my Gen 3 appy mares next season to see if I have any more hiding. :D

@Skylight I can give you some straws from this guy next season at the cost of pulling them if that would help?
NS Stars Or Snowflakes
