Warning: Barn prices via IVs will be changing
-
Very soon (this week!) I am changing how barn pricing works via IVs. If you are sitting on IVs and want to spend them on barns do so now. The cost of a new barn will soon be going up based on the number of stalls you own. (Again only the IV price).
Why the change? We are running over 1.1 million show entries per week on Hj1 alone. Almost all those entries are being created, entered and run automatically without anyone even looking at the horses. Many of these horses don't even have pictures because no one has EVER looked at them.
The number of show entries we are running per day is growing at an unsustainable rate and causing server issues. We have things as optimized as we can get them but there gets to be a point where databases are simply not designed to natively handle that sort of load.
I'm not going to limit the number of horses you can own, or the number of stalls you can own, or the number of shows you can enter or any other number of things I COULD do to slow down show herd growth. Those don't seem that fair. Instead the number of physical stalls you own will modify the cost of new barns.
-This will kick in once you own more than 1000 stalls (does not mater if that is in one barn or 50).
-Primary barn stalls do not count
-Pastures do not count
-Price will change based on the number of stalls past 1000. I don't know what those numbers will be yet.
-Price to buy with real money is NOT changing at all.
-Only IVs because bigger barns print game money and that lets them add more barns and grow at an exponential rate and gobble up server resources making the game run slower for everyone.
I will have more info when I get into the actual code of this but I wanted to warn people who have been stockpiling IVs.

Is there any chance that we could get more IV's for selling/trading in barns? I have several 120 & 210 stall barns that I would like to trade in and upgrade to a 1000 stall barn.
-
You should do it now if you want to get the most stalls per IV. I will not be changing the return price for barns.

Seems a tad unfair for newbies like myself, surely a better way would be to stop the auto shows running in the first place? If people want 1000s of horses they should enter them by hand, in my opinion. I'm prepared to enter all mine by hand, no matter how many I end up with, in fact I don't like auto showing at all!
-
Do you mean entering by hand as in pressing the Enter Barn button or each horse individually? That would be insane. 8O.
She mentioned it would scale by how many stalls you already own, so newbies won't be affected very much. I don't think removing the auto show option would be very fair to the people who already have to spend hours on hours just with breeding maintenance. -
@Hyborian, how is it unfair to newbies? It only effects stables who have more than 1000 stalls. If you have a small stable with fewer than 1000 stalls, the prices will remain the same. So new barns will actually be cheaper for small stables than for huge ones.I was jllewis on the old forum.

Seems like a sensible plan Ammit :)
-
But as new stables grow they will meet a hurdle you never had to encounter. That's where it becomes unfair.
-
But the new rule applies to older members immediately, so they'll have to encounter it the same time as everyone else. Sure, newer players will have to develop slightly slower than the older players had to, but that just means that if any change will happen (and it has to), the sooner the better.
-
As a huge barn I can see how it may seem unfair to smaller barns that I got to buy my barns for less than what they will get to buy their barns for, but the other side of it is my next barn, and I will likely need one more before my show herd stabalizes and I start losing as many as I gain each year, is going to cost a fortune.
It may be unfair, but it is also needed to maintain the health of the servers, so we can all keep enjoying the game. -
Also, the price change is only occurring for IVs. The price of barns being purchased using real money is not being changed, so new/old members can still support the game and advance their barns via that method of purchasing.
-
It is not unfair in anyway to smaller barns as it does not affect them at all. Do you mean newer barns? I don't agree that prices increasing because of increased demand is unfair. People who have supported the game for years got them cheaper when it was less well known. Hardly unfair. They have been here supporting the game for years.
>>nd I will likely need one more before my show herd stabalizes and I start losing as many as I gain each year, is going to cost a fortune.
Why are you assuming things will cost a fortune?

Some info I have found:
Our 4 stables that are over 10k stalls make on average 2.8 million dollars per week . A 1000 stall barn costs 4.1 million. That means it is reasonable that they could purchase a 1000 stall barn every two weeks with Ivs. I would like to make it so once you are in the 10k barn size you can purchase a new 1k barn every 2 months.
On hj1 players in that same 10 to 14k stall range make on average 2.9 million, with HJ1 having more stalls per player in that range. So stalls to earning is very balanced between the two games.
Looks like every stall you own should be earning you approximately 200 hbs per week. Some users make a bit more, some a bit less but that appears to be the flat trend for all accounts.
Average earning per stall is 187 on hj2 and 185 on hj1.

I have not set any prices to change yet but you can now see what the extra percentage you will have to pay when purchasing with IVs will be. The whole system is set up so no mater how many stalls you have over 1k it takes around a month to buy another 1k barn. If I need to spread that out to 2 months I can but we will see how every 1 month works for now.

Eeek. I totally understand why, and think it is a nice way to even it out a bit, but I have to admit I am veeeery glad I bought a new 1000 stall barn on each server this month :P
-
So is this incremental, or do people at that 1-2k range and 2-5k range have to pay the same extra percentage as those that have 10+k? Looking at my barns, seeing I have roughly 1500 horses and gulping if I need several million for a new barn (albeit not quite as much as I am still in the 210 stall barn being my big barn stage)
-
Ok, went and found the barn page. Looks like it is incremental, and the new price is more, but not that bad. Thanks Ammit for making sure the game still runs! :)
-
If you go to the IV page where you would purchase barns you can see what your extra percentage would be. :)

Looking back at the original post, you mentioned that a lot of the horses entered in to the shows have no pictures, indicating that they have never even been looked at. Would it be possible to code some sort of 'enabler' where a horse wouldn't be considered active in the game until the picture had been opened?
-
Yes you could do that but that misses the point. I don't actually care if any one has ever looked at the horse. It is just something that highlights how automated you can do this and how much you can put strain on the server without helping pay for it. That would not slow down growing server strain.

I noticed it today when I went in to get a new show barn today. Tbh, I can't really see it affecting newbies too soon and it doesn't really bother me too much. It took me over 2 years to get to this point where I have over 1k stalls so I can't see newer players having an issue at all.#4519
