Breeding
  • Will it make a difference if I breed horses one by one or if I place them in a pasture to breed?
  • One by one you have more control over which stallion goes to which mare (depending on the size of your pasture). It also works out slightly more expensive to breed in the barn than in the pasture :)

There is also the pasture bonus that can be gained from mares that stay in there for 30+ days. This boosts the quality of the foals but means the mares can't be shown and therefore they don't gain any points.
  • It takes less time and is less expensive, and if you leave the mares in there you can get a breeding bonus for foal quality next time, though it is harder to fine tune which mares go to which stallion if you have multiple boys/generations you want to breed.
  • What is a breeding bonus? Will the foals be higher quality?
  • I bought a small pasture just for breeding. So all mares sit in the primary pasture to get bonus, then go into the 10 mare pasture with the proper stallion when I want to breed. Best of both worlds: they get the bonus and its cheaper, plus breeding is easily controlled. :D

    Breeding bonus:
Mares have a range of quality they can give to their foals. Each day they are in the pasture, the lowest are knocked off. When she has a full 30 days in, she has a smaller range of quality she can contribute, but its at the higher end. You can still get altered foals, but overall, they will be of better quality.

    AFPT:
Average Foal PT. This is an average of the offspring's PT. Of course only tested foals count towards it, but it can be an indicator of the quality the horse produces.

  • Oh ok thank you so much I believe I will place my mare in the pasture! So if you have 3 stallions with your mares it is randomized on who breeds what mare.
  • Yes, they could all go to one or be spread out even or any combination. This works pretty well if they are all the same quality, like all foundations. :)

  • Thank you for helping me out. They are almost all foundations.
I'm slowly getting the hang of this.
  • I must say a small 2nd pasture is a really good addition. I always breed in pasture as it's half the price. Have fun - checking out all your homegrown foals is definitely the best part of the game :)
