Bad Habits?
-
My mare who is around 10 years old, does this weird thing when you go to tighten the girth. She looks back at you and like snaps her teeth, sometimes she does try to snip you but half the time it's just her teeth chomping.
Does anyone have a horse that does/did this?
How can I curve this bad habit? -

My mom's 20 year old mare does it a lot. In her case getting mad at her helps a little bit, but she's kinda set in her ways.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

There was a school horse at my college that would chomp her teeth or scrape them against the wall when someone tightened her girth. My sister did an ethogram on her behavior and concluded that more observations needed to be made to be 100% sure why she did it but it was most likely just what it is, a bad habit. It wasn't as bad if you were slower but she still did it either way. Sometimes it just becomes habit for them and they do it purely for that reason (someone let them get away with it for so long that now they feel they need to do it every time).

I would check for pain--bad saddle fit, girth galls, a dirty girth--before assuming it's just bad behavior. Regardless of whether there is pain now, it's likely at some point that there was pain that was ignored and that's why she started the behavior in the first place, not a bad behavior that wasn't corrected.
This is likely what we call an "avoidance" behavior, meaning it's a behavior meant to try to stop a painful or scary stimulus. It's defensive. You can use long and patient and consistent training to overcome this sort of defensive behavior, or you can simply see to it that she can't reach you when you (slowly, gently) tighten the girth. Anytime you decide to "teach her a lesson" by yanking up the girth hard, you're reinforcing the defensive behavior, so please control that natural impulse!
If she is also "cold backed" you may really want to look into saddle fit, chiropractic or physiotherapy, gel pads, etc etc etc. -
Also check for stomach ulcers, but I agree with cheers make sure it's not a pain response before putting it down to bad behaviour.21170 ~ Breeder of quality Liver Chestnut and Chocolate Palomino riding horses and ponies with unique twists. Specializing in Kit Promoter with fancy white patterns.

So I watched some videos on YouTube about the behavior.
Its definitely a bad habit, I messed with her a little bit today to test her. She showed no reaction to me pressing or rubbing right there.
She has a few bad habits, they were just ignored by the past owners.
I found some methods on how to brake this bad habit.
Thank you for the info everyone!Thanked by 1AHayesHorses -
I have a mare who does it as a bad habit. Mostly I just make sure she's not tied loosely and get after her if she's being particularly feisty. Once she knows I won't take her crap she resorts to pinning her ears and glaring and doesn't fuss too much.
It's worth the effort to try to correct the behavior, but I haven't been very successful personally. I think my mare is just getting old and crotchety.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

My mare bites the wall if you are putting a turnout rig on her or tightening the girth. She also snaps if you take too long to give her her feed bucket.
