Solo holiday to creepy hotel. I'm scared!
-
I go on holiday in 10 days time to Marmaris, Turkey. I've been a few times and absolutely adore the place.
The reason I'm scared is that I've only just read reviews on the hotel I'm staying in, they paint a very colourful picture, both trip advisor and facebook seem to have more negative reviews than positive. I'm staying in the Golden Star hotel if you want to read some of the glowing reviews. Most trip advisor reviews I pay zero attention to, I actually have a little system that I use to determine if a reviewer is just a moaner or not, all I do is check their reviews for other hotels and see if they just pick fault with them. I know some of the reviews are just over exaggerations of people who love to tear places to pieces but some of them seem genuine. Quite a few of the glowing reviews are from Turkish people so I tend to ignore those as they could be friends or family trying to make the business look good.
I've tried contacting the site I booked through to change my hotel but they have said it's too late to cancel (with refund) and because I'm not there I cant change. They're basically saying I can only change when I get there and turn up at the dump of a building that it is or lose out on money and try and find more to book another hotel.

Well I drive a semi...shady is the name of the game....so pack some protection.. pepperspray... check for creepy crawlers and lock doors..travel with others weather locals or not.. be smart and enjoy the little things

Marmaris isn't the problem as I've been there solo several times and it's a safe place. It's the hotel and its manager that has me worried. After the reviews I've read it doesn't seem like a very nice hotel.
Sorry but that it a very typical American answer mentioning protection and pepper spray IMO lol -
Lol well you only get jumped in a Houston parking lot once... and you walk away or you dont ha..and surely it wouldn't be that bad or they wouldn't be in business still.. if it really is bad least you know you won't stay there again

Some of these reviews are just ridiculous but some of them are alarming. As for being in business, I'm not sure on the laws and such but it seems as if they can get away with it as long as it's towards tourists, the police don't seem that interested in what happens to the tourists that travel alone or in groups under 4. Bigger groups seem to get more attention as they will be likely to spend more money.
If it's as bad as some of the reviews then I won't be staying there at all. The ones on facebook seem to be worse. -
Yikes lol what a shame looks so nice

Pepper spray is not legal in many countries. ;)
Unrelated but having been to a good number of countries on the Med. Turkey is the only one I actually felt afraid in. The men where so unbelievably rude and harassing. My husband had a great time wondering around by him self but I could not even walk WITH him without being harassed.

I travel extensively and have learned to take reviews with a grain of salt. Some people pick apart the smallest thing "staff is unfriendly and rude" could be as simple as the cleaning lady didn't have a smile. The good and the bad ones can be paid reviews, so I just dig through them and look for the reviews that don't go to extremes and try to base my judgment on those.Thanked by 1Peninsula

@Ammit It's definitely illegal in the UK. I've only really been to Marmaris and the most hassle I've witnessed is people outside of shops/restaurants saying "yes please?" while gesturing for you to go in. A polite "No, Thank you" and they leave you alone. Can't speak for any other area though.
@EmberGlo I do the same. What I tend to do is click on the reviewer's profile and read their other reviews and see if it was just this hotel or if they are serial complainers. A few are serial complainers, One mentions a TV, Who watches TV while in a vibrant country like Turkey?

I was in Kusadasi which apparently is know for a lot of scams. It was street vendors and taxi drivers that were the problem. I am sure the regular locals would have been lovely if I had ever gotten that far lol.

I went 20 year ago as a kid with my mam. All I can remember is lots of markets and people touching my hair for luck, long and blonde at the time.

6 days to go! I'm just going to go for it. Anything happens and I'll inform my travel agent and the relevant authorities. This will be a good holiday

IT WAS HORRIBLE!
Owner/manager was a total creep, the place was falling apart, food made me ill and gave me intestinal parasites. Never again! -
Oh yuck Im sorry!
-
Aw, wow! That's terrible! I hope you enjoyed some parts of your visit? How do/did you deal with the parasites?
-
Oh no, That is horrid! I hope you are recovering well.

Got some tablets off the Dr. I enjoyed the trip, just not the hotel.
