Personally I don't like the roan gene as much and would probably keep Fire and Gold. Also with the appaloosa gene you run the risk of his stunning coal graying out. If you wanted to GMT him you could add homo flaxen. I love the way that looks on livers.
-
Yes I'd keep Fire And Gold I personally don't like appys just because their coat could whiten out as soon as 3 years old it happened to me, so I stay far away from that gene lol . :)
-
I love Appys :x I have a big soft spot for them I don't know why lol maybe it's because my first horse I ever got was an Appy? :)) honestly if you ever consider selling the Appy I'd gladly take him home :D :x
-
Yes appys are very pretty when they have their color but once they turn all white they are no fun really very plain :)
-
I actually like the varnish gene. It is a shame when the horse goes fully white but I love the way it affects the coat and how can change one horse fully on 3 years and another is barely affected for almost there entire lives.
Example: my 16 year old gelding
CG Titan 2g
And an example of a really cool pattern with varnish
CG Great Escape
The solid colt has sabino which I'm trying to bring more of into my herd. But the appaloosas grand sire was one of my favorite stallions so I kinda want to keep him as well.----

I'd compare them and keep the sup one. If they are AGA each other then I'd go with the App boy and geld the other for show stock. He has a pretty decent pt score for showing.
Also riding on the app thread, App varnish can produce some stunning looking horses :) Here's some of my oldies who are stunners!
III Going Down
IV Hey Hey
IV The Fury
*** This mare below will eventually turn white, but at the moment she's like a cool Siamese
IV Chalk

Sorry to jump into the middle of this discussion, please could someone explain what the Varnish gene is or direct me to where I can read about it? Thank you :)
-
I love roan! It adds a little something special to a "plain" horse. :) I also own a roan horse, so I'm slightly biased. I like appaloosas because I love watching the way varnish affects them all differently. Some are really light, some stay dark! It's a bit of a gamble and that, to me, just makes for an additional level of unpredictability in breeding.ID# 25784 Home of quality Artylian Drafts & Cobs

@LJDobbins Varnish is sort of a whitening gene on a horse. If you look at the first one I posted III Going Down you can kind of see the whitening effect. She has no roan, yet she has this roan like white hair pattern but her spots on her butt are untouched.
There are different levels to varnish, it can just be a small frosting effect to making a horse go completely white.
I would say this horse is a minimum varnish. She has a roan like ticking, but you can see she has some unaffected tiny tops on the top of her butt.
I Plus Plus
Same with this mare;
III Its All Gravy
This horse has very heavy varnishing;
IV The Fury
He was originally a very dark brown with a blanket. All that's left is spots. I think in the horse world they call this a 'false leopard'.
EDIT ******
I think there's a famous stallion IRL who has the varnishing gene in full effect. I think he's called Mystic Warrior? He's a Friesian x Appa stallion. I can't remember if he was grey or if he has varnishing. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!#4519 -
Varnish will never cause a horse to turn all white by age three. :)

Personally I would keep both... they are slightly different so you can have variety. And if you have a basic upgrade you can have 2 different stallions in pasture. Premium 3. You can always weed one out by AFPT later. Or you may find you like how ones foals look more than the other.
Also I doubt you would have to auction, you would have lots of people willing to buy. (Including me)Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
@LJDobbins... the gene that produces the varnishing is the 'Lp" gene.. So technically, all appaloosas have this gene. If they don't have a PATN gene, they appear solid and may look like a roan.. varnishing and roaning are two different things.. Varnishing =Lp gene and roan=Rn...
One Lp gene varnish roan ( with no pattern gene)
WS Chocolate Chip F1
This horse has 2 Lp genes ( LpLp) and again no pattern gene
2nd gen Blue papered
Heres a helpful link that explains appaloosa genetics in a more easy to understand way than some other sites.

And here's the link to Ammits genetics page about the leopard gene on hj2

When you start introducing the PATN gene..is when you get the more pronounced appaloosas patterns
Here's an Lplp with 1 Patn gene
1 WS ff StySty Liver
and finally and LpLp with 2 Patn genes ( PATN1 PATN1)
1 AtAt Patn1Patn1
Roan is different
homo roan ( RnRn)
1 Blue Roan
het roan ( Rnrn)

This is the horse that turned all white at 3. I created her at age 2 like I do all my RS. Then by age 3 she turned white. She got re rolled last season because she turned all white then turned all white again this season and look she is only 5 the appy made her turn white. She might be the only one whitening out that young I don't know but it was a bummer I can't get her to show any appy coloring not even spots or brindle as you can see she has no spots or anything
Beautiful Brindle G1 -
Starfire, yours is a fewspot so will be white.... if you don't want fewspots don't breed two apps together so you can have the 50%chance of color or solid but no chance of a fewspot.
-
Oh she is few spots? I didn't know that so she is supposed to be all white that young?
-
@StarfireAcres Yup, a horse that's homozygous for Lp is typically a snowcap or a fewspot. The blanket size on your girl is so large that she's a fewspot. Varnishing is not what makes her white. :)ID# 25784 Home of quality Artylian Drafts & Cobs

Wow I didn't know that cool thank you :D
-
@StarfireAcres
Here is my fewspot foal, you can see how white he was born :)
And CG you should just keep them both :p... can never have too many horses lol -
Awe so cute Friesian :x
-
Here is another example of a few spot.
2eCG DaVincisFirst His white factor is as big as your girls but he's still almost fully white. Right now he's 4 so I'm. Not sure if varnish is affecting him. If it does I won't tell until he's well into the double digits. I have a few other fewspits as well. Some with varnish some without----
