How many stallions are too many
-
I was wondering how many stallions and colts everyone keeps on average. I feel like I have WAY too many, but they're all so pretty! :)
-
I keep relatively few, but there are only too many if it stresses you out trying to make your matches. I tend to breed with specific goals, so I usually use few stallions but use all/most of their covers each season.
Stallion culling is definitely the hardest and most expensive thing on my list every season. So much comparison testing!!! -
Thank you Nutterlover, you just made my day, lol.
I couldn't help but laugh when I saw your title. It is one thing that I am horrible at. I couldn't tell you how many I have, because I have not looked it up lately. Cheers has given some great advise, but I will tell you that it is one hard thing to do, decide who to keep and who to snip, especially if you are like me and just seem to hoard horses. I've been playing for years, and just finally have decided what I'd like to breed for, so hopefully I'll be cutting down on my studs too.
I just know it can be so overwhelming. Good luck, and thanks again for the laugh. -
I feel like I keep too many stallions myself. I'm a sucker for the pretty boys. I'm currently trying to determine AFPT of my Gen 2 boys just to see where I stand with them. However, even though I'm doing this, I don't plan to alter them or sell any of them. Since I started papering and watching quality late in the game and they're already pretty old, they're just going to be for funsies breeders.
Meanwhile, My original starter herd is quickly approaching their aging out time and I have a few new herds ready to go with clear goals in mind. I plan to be far more strict with these guys, going so far as to keep at most three stallions per gen.
Basically, if you're not really breeding for anything in particular, I wouldn't sweat about it.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.
Striving to become a quality Draft breeder. -
No such thing as too many!
I do "retire" a lot of mine when I no longer use them. But I still hold onto them for sentimental reasons.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

There are never too many lol, I'm a stallion hoarder :p.... gives me variety to breed with and to offer to others for breeding
-
The short answer have as many as you have room for :)
Also you can show them all and the gelding isn't a lot better - the main money from showing is when you level off in a good place and a stallion or gelding is just as likely to end at the top of their class (although a gelding may reach a higher class). I have regretted gelding stallions in the past as I later had mares that would have matched well. -
When you start you need more mares. You can breed 50 to each stallion. It's about room in the barns - keep those you like intact as show stallions but only if you have room. :)

@KerredansCorral Your welcome :))
-
You can never have to many boys lol. I'm a sucker for big beautiful boys. I have way to many.
-
I'm with Friesianpants. If it passes SBA it stays intact. I don't care how many I have.
-
Yes I have a lot of studs the colt fairy has blessed me this season..and yes I'm the same as Friesianpaints and shadOCat if it passed SBA and papers good for their gen then they stay intact and I sell the studs I don't use to people who will love and use them more to me I have a few superior studs for each gen I use for breeding and I sell the rest. I love to share my good horses with people I'm trying to make Kitm a quality gene and not go in the toilet like most Ice and satin horses that would fail SBA.( Not that that's a bad thing) and some players have their own goals but that's just what I do personally :D
-
By the way, if you're looking for hard numbers...
Well, my personal goal is 2 stallions per line per generation, plus or minus a few extra for show lines/public breeding, plus potentially a few under breeding age if I have a superior colt come up in a line.
I tend to geld colts I don't need, but if they Compare at my very high standards they may be offered for sale. It took me a long time to get there, but I now no longer allow colts that don't meet my standards out of my herd intact.
