Ugh pets are so expensive
-
So horrible news bolt my dog I took him to the vet today he has infected anal glands I just got them done a month ago and now he has to be on antibiotics they were 40$ just for antibiotics I just spent 100$ at the vet and tomorrow he is getting his parvo/rabies shot I guess he was a year over due for that shot I had no idea he could have gotten parvo or rabies in that whole year of being over due I didn't even know older dogs could get parvo I thought only puppies got it. I'm freaking out now I can't take him for a walk today oh and the shot is 100$ just for the shot so I just spent 200$ in two days just on one dog pets are so expensive Darnit lol and it sucks because I'm not working at the moment so I have been borrowing money from my mom and ex boyfriend to make it through the month ugh. It would be cool to hear stories of everyone's expensive vet bills. Also when I was 17 I got a pit bull puppy who had parvo and he gave it to my other puppy and I had to put the pit bull down because he was to far gone but my other dog I saved she was a Jack Russell named Piper the bill for that was 600$ and being 17 at the time you could imagine how hard that was to pay off. I wish pets had insurance lol
-
Actually, there are companies that offer pet insurance. Can't think of any of them right now and I do remember them being kinda expensive but for those people who have animals constantly getting hurt, i can see it being worth it.
I don't really keep pets myself, but my SO and I used to stay with his grandmother who had two cats. The boy cat stayed outside and was the buffest cat I had ever seen. This cat was rippling in muscle. His sister would stay inside and was a little fat behind spoiled baby.
Boy cat ended up getting fatty liver disease. Treatment ended up in I think a $1500 bill and we still ended up putting him down because he never responded to treatment. That was a $100 by itself. Ended up burying him in the backyard because cremating him would have been $50 and an additional $80 to get rid of his remains if we had asked the vet to do it.
Girl cat developed a mass in her intestines. It was so large and treatment was so invasive and expensive, she was put down on the spot. Visit alone to find the mass was $120 plus the additional $100 to put her down and 4 hours of me in the backyard digging the grave because I was the only one not losing my mind over the death of this cat. Still missed them both like crazy.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

The cheapest part of getting a pet is buying it! $100 for a vaccination seems pricey to me, but I know vet, feed, and farrier costs can vary wildly by location. The most expensive vet bill I have ever had happened when my husbands pet dog got damaged some how after escaping the backyard. Front leg ripped partially off and lacerations down the side and on the hind leg. Called our regular vet, he politely declined, called another vet who told us to come on, she would meet us at her office (she is now our regular vet). She put him back together. An after hour, weekend emergency jigsaw puzzle and two days with her only set us back $550. We are eternally grateful for her.
-
$100 for a rabies shot alone is pricey. $100 for a rabies, a C3 core canine immunization including parvovirus and a full exam is cheap as chips. $100 for a C5, plus rabies, plus an exam, plus a heartworm test, plus a fecal float is losing the vet money.
An annual exam plus regular vaccinations for a dog in my clinic is $230 before you start adding oh extras like the heartworm prevention injection.
Ripshin, your dog would probably have cost you 5k in my area at minimum.
Pet insurance has saved many of my patients' lives. Anyone with young puppies should investigate it. Read the fine print. If you're vascillating between a few policies, talk to your vet about which one might be better. They technically can't tell you which one to pick, but they can tell you things to look out for like exclusions that you might think are no big deal but could actually cost you thousands of dollars.

My sister just spent over $80 bucks today on just a heartworm test for her dog and she had to buy the meds. Two of my dogs go to the vet tomorrow (both have bad allergies and one just went blind tonight :( ). Then Monday, my sister is having the vet out to see her horses: Teeth floated on her Tennessee Walker and having the vet look at her heels (She forges) and a pregnancy test for her quarter horse.
A little background, her quarter horse is not supposed to be bred. She was pastured with a mare and 2 geldings last school year (This past spring) and apparently, the lady who owns the property saw the QH gelding mounting and acting studly towards the mares during their heat cycles and he was actually trying to breed them. The owner of the gelding didn't bother getting him checked and said he was gelded. Well, yesterday, the owner of the other mare, texted my sister to tell her that she's getting her mare pregnancy tested becacuse she hasn't noticed a heat cycle in months, she's getting noticeably fatter, and her udder/teats are getting sensitive. After that, we put it together and noticed all the same things about my sister's horse... This is a 4 year old mare who has just been put into barrel racing training. If she's pregnant, it'll ruin all of my sister's training/plans for this mare. So if the two mares end up pregnant, that means the "gelding" is actually a proud cut stud with one testicle and his owner is going to be in a lot of trouble for him breeding two mares. My sister is devastated. All this is going to cost an arm and a leg because she's barely scraping by taking care of her two horses, let alone a foal. And she's currently out of work looking for a job. -
Starfire, if your dog continues getting problems with his anal glands where you have to go and get them expressed by the vet ((you could do it yourself, just need gloves and lube, but it does reek!)), you may want to look at getting them removed. I know of someone who has done so because her dog was having tons of problems with his, and he had to be on a special supplement, but not he needs none of that, and no more visits to the vet for his glands. I don't know even remotely how much it would cost, I suggest talking to your vet about this.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
Wow Ahayes that's such a bummer that the mares could be prego by accident I'd be mad about that because the stud should have been gelded who leaves one testicle when gelding I would have that vet who did the procedure sued.
Yea I should really look into pet insurance and yes 100$ seems like a lot for a rabies/parvo shot it's crazy! I can see people being broke and not taking care of their animals because it's so expensive if I didn't have my mom to help I'd be scr**ed. They should give breaks to people with low income. A
And timber sorry about the cats that's to bad I couldn't imagine Loosing my favorite animal I have ever had and it's this guy who I'm having to give the shot to and pay 200$ in two days but he's worth it he is my everything. I couldn't make it through life without him id dieThanked by 1AHayesHorses -
Good luck with your dog, vets bills are never fun but they're the reality of pet ownership.
My worst vet bill currently is $900 for my cat, she was living with my parents while I was uni and I came back to her drooling blood. I couldn't just put her down so I forked out from my horse fund. Of course as things go, my horse is now having problems. She's six and I'm seriously considering just retiring her since she's paddock sound but no, I'll probably decimate my bank account first trying to fix her. -
Thank you Willoway awe sorry about your cat if this just happened hope she gets better soon and so sorry about your horse hope she gets better soon to and wow 900$ for a vet bill is very spendyThanked by 1Willoway

Sorry to hear about your dog and the not-so-cheap vet bill!
I think the worst vet bill I ever got (as an adult, that was totally on me. I won't even go into all the colic bills that my first horse, Bunny, racked up while I was in high school) was actually more like a series of bills and a series of unfortunate events last year. It started with Bunny coming down with EPM in the summer. Two months of medication alone wound up costing about $1800, plus a few hundred more for diagnostics, etc. After the diagnosis, I decided it was time for Bunny to retire from jumping (we weren't even originally sure she'd survive or if I'd be able to ride her again at all), so at my husband's suggestion, I started horse shopping for a new jumping/showing companion. That's when the next series of unfortunate events happened, with the horse I found to buy, William. I entered into a lease-to-own contract for him and had paid $2000 for the first two months. One month into the contract, he started having serious respiratory attacks. He had one, and then five days later another. After the second attack, he went back to his previous home. The vet bills while he was in my possession wound up costing another $2000 - which was also just about his remaining purchase price. I wound up paying the vet bills but backing out of the sale after he had another attack back at his old home as well. He sadly passed away a month later, on the day that the lease would have been up and ownership would have been 100% on me. It was a very expensive and difficult year.
The new horse that I bought this year is insured, but I hope we never have to go through something like that, even with insurance. My dogs and cat are not insured, but we have Care Credit in case of emergency. -
Thank you it's not fun paying for it but I'd pay any amount to keep my pet in good health just like you did and wow Kinetic I'm so sorry about those unfortunate events that's to bad about your horse that died. The owners that were leasing him to you should have known he was sick and should not have sold/leased him to you. That sucks you had to pay all that money when he died anyways but at least you tried to save him. I'm very glad your new horse is insured smart move there. What kind of horse is she/he? And sorry about Bunny not being able to jump anymore that's to bad :(
-
Thanks Starfire. It was hard, but luckily I found Prada (my new horse), and we've been a great team so far! She's a Brandenburg Warmblood and we ride/show in Hunters. :)
Bunny is still doing well, and she turned 23 this year so I'm just glad she's happy and comfortable! We still hack around a few times a week, and hopefully I'll be riding her in a Hunter Pace (without doing any of the jumps) in October. -
Your welcome. Your new horse sounds so lovely it's cool he is a warmblood like the horses on this game. What color is he? Awesome I love Hunter. :)
Good I'm very glad Bunny is doing well she is a trooper that's good she is happy and comfortable. What kind of horse is Bunny? Do you just have the two horses?..Ooohh Hunter pace sounds fun hope she does well doing that :) -
I understand completely about vet costs. When I took my 6r old Dane to the vet I did all vaccines (Rabies and DAPL) then I did heartworm test. Blood work since he's considered a senior and got heartworm prevention and 3 doses of Bravecto for my pets and it was $400. But I really hope your puppy gets better soon. Anal glands are no fun.

I have two cats, the first one was such an expensive little baby.
So Poppy, my little persian x was poisoned by our landlord. She was 12 weeks old.
Went floppy in my arms, foamed at the mouth and went from screaming to dead quiet. Took her to the vets, charged £700 ($900 USD), emergency treatment. She didn't respond very well to bleach and it burnt her throat and stomach lining. Her stomach lining bunched up and was inflamed 3 days later, she was screaming and vomiting every 5 minutes, called emergency vets and brought her in. £400 ($520 USD) she was partially sedated, given pain relief, anti-nausea medication and basically was flying as high as a kite. We waited out the 12 hours and took her into the vets for follow up. She went under anesthetic, had a blood panel to test for further complications, had x-rays and was kept in the vets for the day. £500 ($650 USD) later they couldn't find anything so it was thought that she had damaged from the bleach. We were then given oral medication (anti-biotics & stomach liner), and we were in pretty much every three weeks where her stomach flared up. This cost us £30 a pop.
She cost us a little over £2.2k ($2.8k USD) and wiped out our savings. She's now on a raw diet since she's sensitive to most ingredients in foods, and she is a fragile little baby. She's also fully insured now since I refuse to have a repeat of that dark time again. Landlord refused to compensate or admit that he intentionally poisoned our kitten, agency sided with him and booted us out despite there being an agreement and pet contract in place to have her.
New place, she's fat, happy, grumpy and somewhat distrustful lady but I love her. We got her a sister too and they frolic in the garden most days (we walk them on harnesses) and enjoy the safe life of indoor cats.
Winnie is a cheap as chips cat. She'll eat anything, no allergies, no illnesses, you could probably drop a bomb on this cat and she'd walk out as a winner. The most expensive thing was having her uterus ripped out. Then again she was from a feral colony, her ancestors were made to be survivors.#4519 -
Quality health care is expensive. However, I think it's still safe to say that veterinary care for our pets is still much cheaper then human health care (at least in the US). Rabies vaccines for humans can cost over $300 for a single shot (and usually requires boosters) and isn't always covered by insurance. As others have said, having health insurance for helps take the bite out of the costs - for both people and pets.
I admit, I wish they'd had pet health insurance plans were as good back when I got my first Golden Retriever a decade ago as they are now. I was a vet assistant at the time, so all the costs I incurred were with significant staff discounts.
She had been a genetic trainwreck. She was born blind, so back then finding an insurance plan that would accept her had been tough. She started showing signs of severe hip dysplasia by 8 months of age so we ended up doing orthopedic surgery on both hips (with rehab and everything - $7500). By two years of age, she developed acute glaucoma and we removed both eyes. Between diagnostics, surgery and rehab another $1000. By five years of age, an aggressive cancer spread quickly through a front leg and after $600 worth of diagnostics we lost that battle. But, I've met few dogs with as wonderful a personality; worth every single penny. -
So sorry about your kitten Boubon that's so sad you and her went through a lot but at least you had that savings when it happened because if you didn't there would have been nothing you could have done to save her unless your credit is good and you got a loan. Your landlord should have gotten in trouble for that and should have paid for some of that because animals don't just eat bleach the landlord must have been the one that could have poisoned her. And wow her vet bill costed so much but since no one was going to help you pay for it like the landlord you had to pay for it sorry about that.
Oh wow Waldgraf that's so much money on one pet it puts my bill to shame lol sorry you had to go through that there are some pets that are born with bad genetics/problems just like people. And my shots that I got this year were covered by insurance so I never pay anything to go to the doctor or dentist I pay more for my pets then I pay for myself in health care it's ridiculous -
My horse Sky that I had gelded two years ago at 13 went from being 110.00 for gelding to over a 1000.00 for fighting two infections. He is worth it to me even though I don't ride but once in a great blue moon now.
Ursa is gonna cost me 70.00 for spaying her and another 30.00 for her shots and the pain shot that should last 3 days for her. -
Awe poor Sky baby and yes all animals are worth the money we spend on them
I can't live without my animals they are my kids. And who is Ursa again? I never heard you talking about this girl. And spaying where I am is over 150$ 70$ is not as bad but still sucks. I'm really considering putting insurance on my animals for sure lol -
Prada is a bay - she's the horse in my profile picture, although I'm not sure if it shows up if you're on mobile, so here's a photo of her.
Bunny is registered as an "American Warmblood" but she's a 3/4 Thoroughbred x 1/4 Shire cross. Here is a picture of her as well. :) -
I love them omg!! So pretty thanks for sharing :x I love bunnies thin stripe and snip on her face so cute :)Thanked by 1Kinetic
-
You're welcome, thank you for the compliments on them! Prada has a star on her forehead, but her forelock always hides it. :)) Bunny's snip is my favorite marking - I call it her kissy spot. :)
-
Ursa is my sons dog. Here they go by weight when they spay or neuter. She is a Great Pyrennes Rottweiler cross.
-
I love her kissy spot so cute and your very welcome I love stars on horses to my Arabian and "morab" morgan/Arabian both had perfect stars. And Doc my mom's thoroughbred had only a kissy spot to :)
-
And awesome Brest friend what kind of dog is Ursa? Oooh I love Rotties and she sounds like a cool looking cross :)
