How long for a show horse
-
I have been whittling away at my herd to raise money. Looking at my show horses I auctioned off a few of the low pointers, I was surprised to see how badly this guy was performing compared with others.

He tested well but I gelded him thinking he would be a nice show horse, his PT score is decent. Could a horse like this be a late bloomer or will he always be subpar. How long do you keep a show horse before you can tell. -
You shouldn't be culling horses until they level off, I believe. Certainly not a 3 year old though!
Horses start training at 2, so your horse has only had 1 years worth of training, really, which isn't much at all. He could level off at the top of his class for all you know, so you should wait and see what he does.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

He's only 3 years old, and a horse can only begin training at the age of 2. I'd give him several more years (months) before making a decision. My understanding is show scores (where they place in a show) is only indicative of where they stand within a certain level, so right now he's still learning. :)ID# 25784 Home of quality Artylian Drafts & Cobs

ooh, I had him entered in a show and he went up a grade and gained some points in the time since I posted this :)) I'll just have to be more patient with culling.

I've said it before and I'll say it again..i don't even look at my horses after I've snipped them and stuck them in a barn. I probably have horses that I don't remember breeding or buying. :))
