Testing
  • What is Performance Test Grade and Testing? What's Good, what's bad?
  • 'You can take your horse to the Performance Testing grounds. They will be reviewed by Dorris. Dorris is an old hand in the horse showing world. With more than 40 years as a judge, she has seen it all. No one can evaluate a horse's potential like she can. After the evaluation your horse will receive a grade. The grade will be recorded with his other important testing information. Each test costs $500 hb's'

Thats directly from the performance testing page. I have 3 horses who pt at at 11.8

  • I think it largely depends on what you are breeding for.
I have one that PTs at 11.8
And I have another who PT'd at 2

I kept both. My highest PT horse is spayed; she is part of my show string.
And my low PT is part of my breeding program.

I find that low PT mares, can be very good breeders. Usually not good showers, but good breeders.
I have gotten 10+ PTs out of mares who's PT's look like .3.

The only time I cull a horse for PT, before giving them a chance, is when they get altered or if they are like a G3 with a PT of 2. I like to see my breeders also, despite their low PT if they have one, giving off PTs that are greater than their own. And sometimes, even when I have a high PT, I alter because I know they will make much better show horses.

Most of the time, though, especially for foundations, I give horses a chance to prove themselves before culling them.

    You never know, sometimes.

They can have a high PT and still be a bad show horse-- ergo, losing all the time... but they still can gain points, which gets you money as well. They can have a high PT and be a terrible breeder, but a good show horse. They can have a low PT and win at shows-- but they won't get very far in levels. They can have a low PT and make lovely breeders, they can have a low PT and be terrible at both shows and breeding and so on.

  • Performance testing is a predictor of how quickly your horse trains, and the level he or she can attain by the time they "level off" -- reach their highest potential in the show ring. A horse with a higher PT score will level off at a higher showing level and thus accumulate more points for you by the end of their show career. That's not to say that a horse with a low PT won't earn you a bunch of money, because that's not necessarily the case. A good average PT for a foundation is in the 9-10 range. The max in the game right now is around 13.

It's important to note that Performance Test has NOTHING to do with breeding ability, so you shouldn't cull a breeder because they have a low PT. A good real-life example is Secretariat, who if he had a "PT score" would have been astronomical... but he turned out to not be a very good sire of race horses (though he produced some mares who were). All of the hidden numbers in the game -- the numbers that make one horse a good breeder and one horse a good performance horse -- are what make it so realistic. The various tests available are ways to get hints at what those numbers are for a particular horse, though it's never quantified exactly, just like in real life.

If you are upgraded, you can look at a horse's offspring's average PT, if you test them (it's at the bottom of the "family" tab on the horse's page), and that IS a good indicator of their breeding ability. A horse that consistently produces low PT foals for their generation should likely be altered or sold. Of course, if you're not upgraded, you can calculate an average the old-fashioned way by adding the PTs and dividing by the number of foals.
