Tell me an interesting Eclipse fact! FINISHED
-
The first 15 people to tell me an interesting Eclipse fact will win a FANTASTIC prize!
READ ALL THE PREVIOUS FACTS that have been posted, though, because duplicate facts will not be considered! -
Where are the previous eclipse facts?
-
The longest a total solar eclipse can last is 7.5 minutes.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms
-
Carly Simon's song "You're so vain" referenced the total eclipse of the sun in Nova Scotia. Two solar eclipses ("Then you flew your Learjet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun") were visible from Nova Scotia in the early 1970s, on March 7, 1970,and July 10, 1972. Simon said she wrote the song in 1971, so she likely referenced the one from 1970.

Depending on the geometry of the Sun, Moon, and Earth, there can be between 2 and 5 solar eclipses each yearBreeding liver chestnut drafts that carry snowflake and kp.
Also breeder of mushroom, watercolour, chinchilla, splash m, wrong warp and thunderstruck.
Horses generally always available.
PM me for any enquiries.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
This is fun! My fact is...
That animals become confused and start to prepare to sleep and do things that they usually do at night during an Eclipse!Where quality Show and Performance Horses are bred.

Well, if the moons orbit were perfectly circular, we'd have solar eclipses every month. But since moons orbit is tilted and elliptical (just like earth's orbit to the sun) the moons shadow usually misses earth. I think that would take a whole bunch of the superstition out of an eclipse if that was the case.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.
Striving to become a quality Draft breeder.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
The greatest number of eclipses in one year was five, in 1935, and one month, July 2000, had two eclipses. :)
Edit* this was from NASA :DThanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
2017 solar eclipse will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S.
in 38 years!Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
While everyone in the continental US will be able to see the eclipse, it'll pass through 10 states:
Oregon
Idaho
Wyoming
Kansas
Missouri
Illinois
Kentucky
Tennessee
Georgia
South CarolinaThanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
In a Solar eclipse the light you see around the moon is called the corona, it is the suns outer atmosphere:)
-
So according to NASAs website (it's unlike the rest of their website, very crowdsourced), the earliest recorded solar eclipse was in 2137 BC, recorded by drunk astronomers Hi and Ho.
-
North Carolina will be able to see it too!! :)
-
On April 1, 1764, an eclipse passed over England, and a mare foaled a chestnut colt during the darkness. He went on to win 18 races and he is found in most modern thoroughbred's pedigree. We even have a modern award named for him. His name, appropiately, is Eclipse.
-
P.s. - I laughed so hard at RoseFlutes. Two drunk astronomers named Hi and Ho. :))
-
During a total solar eclipse, as the sun slides behind the moon there is usually one very bright spot of sunlight coming around the moon called a "Diamond Ring". Just before the sun slides all the way behind the moon to the total eclipse, the "diamond" spot may break up into what are called Bailys Beads as the sunlight is filtered over hills and valleys on the edge of the moon.
-
Ripshin, I never knew that's where the Eclipse Awards name came from. What a cool fact.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

A Solar Eclipse always coincides with a New Moon and a Lunar Eclipse always coincides with a Full Moon. They both occur quite regularly approximately every six months. Occasionally there will be back to back Lunar Eclipses (one Full Moon, and then again the next), but I'm pretty sure this never happens with the Solar Eclipses.
Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
@Cheers, that I never knew. I always thought those beads of light were just optical illusions caused by light refraction. The more you know...Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

In Florida, it'll be at its peak at 2:30 pm, but you can still see it from 1:30-4:30 ;) but I'll be in school so I won't be able to see it :(Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

@Travler - re-read the original post and double check your interesting fact!!
-
1. I'd like to thank you all for giving me ideas for naming my Year 50 foals.
2. I've been listening to you're so vain on repeat... Help me.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.
Striving to become a quality Draft breeder. -
Lol maybe I should take notes for these names or I'm just going to have to keep making bad puns =))
-
@Timber my fact was also from the NASA site, so I assume it was legit! Also, back away from the iPod. Or at least put on Total Eclipse of the Heart too....
-
Ooh! I forgot about that song. You should find the literal version of it.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

During an eclipse, you can't look at it directly without damaging your eyes. So they sell funny looking glasses to wear so that you can watch it. I bought 2 pairs and my hubby and I are going to the Tetons to watch (we live in Montana, so it's not a long drive:) )Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms
-
A total solar eclipse can happen once every 1-2 years. This makes them very rare events.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms
-
The width of the path of totality is usually about 160 km across and can sweep across an area of Earth’s surface about 10,000 miles long.

If any planets are in the sky at the time of a total solar eclipse, they can be seen as points of lightCelestial Performance Horses

I am also awarding an prize to Jezmynespice1, since I found an extra hiding out in the barn.
Travlr, Mistidog, and MoonAcre will get consolation prizes.
Mistidog, because I wasn't sure if your posting the times it will be visible in Florida was a 'fun' fact, or just a comment.
Travlr because it was a legit fact, but a duplicate,
MoonAcre gets a participation award for posting!
(see next post)

I'm going to try a new thing for handing out prizes, so please forgive me if we run into any glitches!
The top 16 people on the list will get a SET of Rank Special horses. One mare, One stallion, of the SAME RS. In other words, 2 Vault of Stars horses, or 2 Texas Tea horses, etc.
I am going to do a random drawing of all your IDs and list them in the order they are pulled. The first person will get their pick of one of the pairs of RS horses I have available, second will get theirs once the first person has picked, etc.
The 3 consolation prize winners will get one RS horse, and will get to pick after the first batch is done.
We have to get the picking done by Thursday night, since I am going on vacation for 5 days and won't be back to hand out the prizes until the following Wednesday. (Unless I get really bored in Vegas, but don't hold your breath!)
(drawing list to follow)
Thanked by 1Cheers -
Copy and paste the WHOLE list, please, but add your choice of horses. Don't post your pick until the person ahead of you has posted theirs!

Yes, it is, but I had it sorted by Name, so that the different RSs were together. I don't mind which ones people pick, as long as they have the same Rank Special.
-
Oh! and I just notice that the breed name was removed! Have to fix that!
-
Do you want us to post a link to the horse we want or just their name? Thankuou so much for doing this :)Breeding liver chestnut drafts that carry snowflake and kp.
