What breed should I choose
  • So I'm trying to narrow down my breeding projects, and I don't know what to choose, I love my sport ponies and I think they're a fun project but Riding Horses have caught my eye recently but I also have a lot of Warmbloods that I love (mostly because I can't help myself around sales or HH) :)) Just curious if anyone knows which would be best to start on, Warmblood or Riding Horses :) Thanks
  • I actually breed drafts but the good thing is you can actually breed both. You can take sport ponies and actually breed them into drafts and visa versa. So, don't feel bad about keeping any horse of any size if you really like them. You can selectively breed the offspring into whatever size you want. I know a few people have gotten draft babies from two warmblood parents. It's all good :)

  • I breed Warmbloods, but I really have no particular reason for it except that's what I started with. I like them and really don't have room or funds to branch out, just yet :)

  • I breed a little bit of everything. If you're more focused on size than color/pattern, that's fine, but there are no inherent values to one size over another.

It seems like there are fewer ponies than horses in the game in general. It also seems like the light bone body style is less popular than the medium or heavy body style, but that just anecdotal and not based on a horse search of the game.

As others have said, if you're focused on the goal you can breed from riding ponies up to draft horses over several generations if you want to (or vice versa). Some people breed for really tall horses or really short ponies, but I would say most of us are more color/pattern and quality focused than size focused.

  • I breed warmbloods. I love how they look. I also have some sport ponies and drafts mixed in because I can breed them to bigger or smaller stallions in hopes of getting a warmblood :) I would breed what appeals to you :)

  • Maybe pick your top few stallions overall and breed to all? Then you'd still get some variety, but it's not like your working ok 3 separate lines.

  • I only breed warmbloods for the most part and that's just because I started with them (it's way easier to use the "defaults" on making horses on create a horse - I meant to breed drafts but after accidentally creating warmbloods I just kinda went from there lol).

  • I breed riding horses, and especially riding ponies, because A) they look like Arabians and B) they seem to be less common in the game.

  • Yes arabians are awesome but I also love the warmbloods on here the remind me of paints/quarter horses so pretty :)

  • I only breed WB, Draft, and RH I take ponies if they have what I'm looking for but usually stick with the 3 just so I have variety :)

  • Soooo I got curious because the Riding horses being least common in the game is news to me (I'm swinging my whole game that way), so I did the numbers:
    221,956 Warmbloods,
    66,718 Draft Horses,
    39,571 Riding Horses.

193,770 of the Warmbloods are horses, 28,192 ponies (13% of total Warmbloods),
54,982 of the Drafts are horses, 11,767 cobs (18%),
31,694 of the Light breeds are Riding Horses, 7,874 Riding Ponies (20%).

But how about in the grand scheme of things?
    328,994 horses total.

    67% Warmbloods (59% horses, 8% ponies),
    20% Drafts (17% horses, 4% cobs {rounded up}),
    12% Light breeds (10% horses, 2% ponies).

So, our populations as of August 12th, during the hour of 9am, are as follows:

    59% Warmblood horse
    17% Draft horse
    10% Light horse
    8% Sport pony
    4% cob
    2% riding pony

These were censused by the search with 14.2 the tallest height of ponies. I used 1.5 and 2.5 in the search parameters because I didn't want to write out 1.49 and 2.49. Since they didn't seem to care when I sorted by size to check the ponies, we'll assume that sorted them correctly. :P

  • Also, 2,015 are above 17.1 hands, which I consider to be the beginning of gianting, which is .6% of the whole population. :P
  • Nice bit of work @RoseFlute. I know a lot of breeders tend to breed tall - so I am expecting that that number above 17.1 will increase. :)
    Thanked by 1RoseFlute
  • No doubt. I'm one of them. ;)
  • There are 720 horses under 13 hands (12.0 to 12.3, haven't seen any under 12.0). :)

  • Yes I definitely breed for height and sometimes bone..if a horse is under 16 hh or 16.1 hh I won't use it for breeding I alter them..I'm a little OCD with the horses height lol I don't like them if they are to short for me so ponies are out of the question only tall warmbloods for me lol
  • I breed everything and I don't fuss about height at all. You just never know what someone else might like when it's time to cull.
  • I started off with warmbloods, then I bred a 2G with a a 2G and some how got a draft, even when I breed horses of a higher gen,i still get a draft or a riding horse, think it's the parents of lower gens bringing it back! Now I don't mind whatever I have because I breed for quality , so if my A papered 2G draft stallion is bred to a red mare, I get a 3G blue /A papered foal! It's a lot of fun to mix and match :)
