Help with even breeding.
  • I have looked at the studs up for public brood and I absolutely love the variety in color.

My question is how far back in generations does unevenness not have such a huge impact? I'm just starting out all over again with completely evenly bred pastures and barns.
  • To me...Uneven is uneven (No matter how far back).
If you are trying to keep your lines even but want some pretty colour and patterns then just ask...Most of the players here are happy to help out (Especially if you are going to keep lines even and breed for quality).
What size do you breed for? I am mainly a Draft breeder but I do have a couple of warmbloods (That didn't make Draft size lol). I would be happy to help you out :)
What colours/patterns were you interested in?

  • Can I pm you @Goobanni? I have several questions.
  • Generally speaking, for those of us who have been playing a long time, once you get past the visible pedigree (the pictures that show on the family page) it becomes increasingly less important as the full pedigree gets longer and longer. Personally, in HaJ1, where I use tattoos to mark generations, I have tattoos for each generation through 5. After that, they all get lumped together under the Long Pedigree tattoo.

Ammit, however has been trying to wean us away from relying on even generation breeding toward even ability breeding, and even then to not worry about it if we want to get a high PT score line, for instance, in a hurry.
De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

  • I personally strive for completely even breeding through gen 4 or 5 and then don't care as much, though I am unlikely, at this point, to breed high gen horses to foundations except to get show ponies or show pony producers. I am using foundation mares in my Fantasy show pony line, but none of the intact horses from that line will ever leave my barn.
  • I'm less caught up on generation as I am on paper level. I have a couple studs that are uneven, but they had genes that I wanted. They hadn't been through SBA when I got them, maybe because the breeder didn't have access to that test, but I SBA all of my foals from them and I have a few from my ice stud that passed everything. I bred him to foundation mares, and he was a C out of a B and a C, so when I finally did test him, he got gelded. I got a couple of studs and a couple of mares out of him to keep the line going, and I plan to keep it even, so it should work out.
  • I am newer to the game than most people and I started off uneven and noticed most of mine were altered so I started to evenly breed. I now only breed evenly. I'm only at gen3 but I like this much better and I have more of a success rate this way :) Most people will sell you horses if you just ask. I would get an idea of what you want to breed and it makes it so much easier!
  • After generation 5 I give up with the even breeding. As long as they match in quality (same paper, similar AFPT) then they'll be chucked together :)

  • Love seeing a good range of ideas here. :D

My question is how far back in generations does unevenness not have such a huge impact?

Technically it has zero impact on your rate of intact foals.

  • I am relatively new to HaJ (9 months in) and I am still learning new things all the time. I am hooked! I am however glad to see that uneven generation breeding is not such a bad thing. I was beginning to feel ashamed that a lot of my stock is uneven and was even thinking of selling all stock and starting again. However listening to all the recent threads I'll not worry so much! :)
  • From what I've always understood, it's never been a bad thing. It's just more aesthetically pleasing to see an even pedigree.

Like me for instance. I know that inbreeding and uneven generational breeding doesn't do anything as long as I try to match quality for quality, but there's just something satisfying about keeping pedigrees even and linear. Since I'm not really looking for anything in particular with my current higher generations, I plan to see how far I can go with the generations before they stall or die out. Which probably won't be very far. lol.
Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

  • Timber has it spot on. :)
