Strange horse names
  • I'm moving back onto an old livery yard and it has some new resident who have some strange names

    Peas and Beans - OTTB
Fish - My girl when she arrives on Sunday
Denver the Dinosaur - Shetland stallion
Uno - Another shetland stallion that i'm going to start training

What strange names are on your yard?
I'm trying and having fun doing it.
  • There are a few more shetlands but I can't remember their names yet
I'm trying and having fun doing it.
  • We have a Fanta (like Fanta orange soda because she's a chestnut but is very orangey) she came with the name Babe though. Which we hated. There's also a "Tails"
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
  • My horse was "Peanut" until we got him. My sister's horse was Giraffe.

There was Donny, short for Donnybrook.

HJ was short for He Jumps

A big, solidly built TB named Tank

Dollar, because that's what someone bought him out of a backyard for. He became Phoenix.

Winnie the Pooh and Kermit the Frog were two school ponies I knew.

  • I used to own a horse called Tango because he was a very orange chestnut, I also knew a horse called Irn Bru because she was a chesnut from scotland
I'm trying and having fun doing it.
  • We don't really have any strangely-named horses at my barn, but there's a pony that comes to all the local shows named Banana Pancake. :))
  • @Cheers

Oh wow, I've known about 5 equines with the name of Peanut! Crazy (Including a somewhat evil mini I used to have when I was a little kid)

Also, one of my favorite stallions of all time is named "Nike"
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
  • One of my favorite horses was a friends stallion. He was a palomino Florida Cracker stallion and his name was SOS (Son Of Satan). He was the sweetest boy. You would never know he was a stallion unless you you another stallion beside him. It was like a switch was flipped and that little guy would lay into the other stallion like there was no tomorrow.
  • I rode a horse when I worked at the stock yards that was named "Spook". Not very reassuring. I only rode him once, and he was fine for me. Also knew a lady who had a big gray gelding named "Gator".
  • @HUSG--my boy was a 15 hand OTTB. He spent some time on the track in Mexico and during that stint was called whatever Peanut is in Spanish...
  • Several of you have heard me talk about it before, but my favorite name ever was the QH mare named Phffft!

  • My own horses are called Brendan and Sarah, so I can't really talk.

In my past experience working at various horse places, here are some of the more interesting names I've come across:

-A racehorse whose stable name was Bucket. He ended up racing with the name Mr. Bucket
-a racehorse filly called Dangermouse (and that was only her stable name). I don't know what she ended up racing as.

I was a working pupil at an eventing yard for over a year and came across many wonderful stable names including: Wobbs, Wallace, Fudge, Zinc, Twix, Surprise, Uno (who was an ISH mare whose show name was Irish One)
-a horse whose show name was Poseidon as he had a habit of jumping into dams to avoid being caught!

At a small TB stud I used to work at:
    -a broodmare called Doodle.
-another broodmare whose registered name was Ravenous Lass as her dam's name was Munchie. We just caller her Cherry.
    -a yearling colt called Dylan
-another yearling colt who was by a stallion called Purrealist. As a result, my boss would refer to him as 'the Purrealist', except he would get it mixed up with the word Polaris as we had one of those Polaris buggies for driving around the property. In the end the name stuck and he is now called Polaris.
-Two fillies called Little and Little-er. As the names suggest they were quite below average in size.
-Another filly called Pastie and one called Wendy
    -A beautiful gelding called Angelo
-A gelding who was quite plain and frankly a bit ugly who we called Donk. His actual name, I think was Prince, but Donk suited him a bit better!

And at the current racing stable I work there is a filly called Woolie.
  • I volunteer at a horse arena that works with special needs kids it's in with the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind. And we have a beautiful liver chestnut mare who is named Cow but she is also know as Bell's Heart. Then we have Reba, Big K, Jim Bob, Patrick, Montana, Morning, Emily, Roger, and Image! But I like all their names because of how they fit each horse!

  • I Two of the strangest names of horses that I bought were NuNu and Bobo.

NuNu became Bongo and Bobo became Romeo.
  • My moms horses name is Pandi. A horse we're looking at to buy is "Teddy". Boy we love our stuffed animals. Lol. Jk, they came with those names.
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
  • @Skylight my dog gets called NuNu because shes like the tellytubbie hoover and called Luna
I'm trying and having fun doing it.
  • I have an Arabian mare named Cake because everyone loves cake lol :))
  • The rule at my house is never name an animal a person name lol
  • @OakCreek13 I completely agree. Except for my bitch, she is named after the goddess of the hunt, seemed fitting with her being a greyhound.

    I have;
    FishFish - Goldfish
Shrimpy - All 10 of my shrimp
    Odie - Poodle
    Luna - Greyhound
    Fish - OTTB
    Pudding - Hamster - Deceased
I'm trying and having fun doing it.
  • OakCreek, I used to have that rule! I MUCH prefer that my critters NOT have human names! So, now, of course, I have Cody, Alex, Billy, and Max! :/

In my defense, all of them except Cody came with pre-existing names, and we just never found a different one for Cody that fit. We justify it by saying that he liked Cody and wanted to keep it, and informed us telepathically of his decision. Like there is such a thing as cats with telepa......must feed kitties now...the good stuff....in the can....good girl, momma!

Always Looking for FF's and Liver Pearl's
  • I could never name an animal Nunu mainly because of what it means in NZ! For those of you who don't know, it can be used to refer to a females private bits. It's used all the time by the people I know who breed and show dogs ((eg. "Her Nunu's the size of texas!" When talking about a dog in season)).
Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
    Prices are almost always negotiable.
  • Ours all have fairly normal names at the moment. Riley, Peanut, Nate, Belle, Lola and Benji (also referred to as Benjamin, Eeyore, donkey, Jackass or worse depending on his attitude that day. He is an actual donkey tho)

The worst ones we've had in the last 10 years I've been there was:

Couch (horrid, horrid sway back, she didn't stay long)

Dooby (lol always messed up and called him Dobby the house elf),

Pert (her owner was scared of her and let Pert run the show and say oh poor pert the others in her field pick on her! but really she was a witch and without provocation she would just go up and kick her field mates)
  • One of the ex racers that came to our barn had the registered name of Pickle Head. No wonder she did not win races. I have had a Bucky (he came with it) Dually - built like a truck, have known a horse named Trout. Most of my other horses had fairly normal horse names - except my daughters horse (mare) who was registered as Granite when she got it. To be fair, she was a little unrefined. We nicknamed her Sumo Wrestler.
  • I use to have two registered rex rabbits. When I brought them home I wanted cool names for their papers. My dad helped. The buck was Sir. Humps-a-lot and the doe was Mrs. Plumps and Pops. He said it fit them beacuse it was what they would be doing lol
  • My 2 year old Andalusian is called Mostaza... Spanish for Mustard! Always tickles me, we've renamed her Moss because she super soft and cuddly :D

My 13 year old Friesian is called Maike, which is Dutch for Beloved :-* They're the strangest on my yard haha
  • I've got this little filly she's got more of a funny name rather than strange lol

  • I didn't have very many strange named horses other then my chestnut and white paint mare with blue eyes that came with the name Dolly but I re named her to Kyanne Pepper she was spicy she bucked me off all the time even though she was trained for 6 months she was young only 3 or 4. Then we had another horse who was an ex race horse his registered name was sir Docs On A Holiday
  • I've known horses named Pink, Hi-tech, Partee..ive known so many horses I can never remember all their names :(( My personal horses are Annie and Magic. I do like "human" names for some horses. I've known a Joe, Louie, Tommy, Billy, Bob, Willie. And when in trouble called them by their "full" names, Joseph, Louis(this one got in trouble frequently), Thomas, William, Robert, William.
    Thanked by 1StarfireAcres
  • My friend boards horses for people and the one OTTBs name is Ohh, as in Ohh So Expensive...
  • Mine are Red, Nakota, Jack n' Whiskey, Beatriss(she's my horse), Mawi (from moana and the colt from beatriss), April, Fancy, and our cows are Panda, Jester, and Moo(my cow I need to start working with next week :D ^ those aren't really unusual but I thought I'd say them all... we have other animals with weird names but I doubt you'd really want to hear them
