How do I start well?
  • Hi I am Kelsey and I am just trying to find someone to mentor me to do this the right way.
  • Welcome to the world of Hunt and Jump. It's a complex game, but one of the most interesting things about it is that each one of us chooses our own goals and our own way of playing, so there is no one right way to play. Here are a few hints:

    1. To find out about how to breed your horses, check out the link to "Breeding Info" near the bottom of the left menu bar.

    2. To show a horse, click on the orange arrow to the right of its name and select any available class. You can show your horses twice each week.

    3. It is important to train your horses weekly so that their performance in shows continues to improve. You can do that under "Showing" in the left Menu Bar. Horses can be trained only once each week. The earlier in the week (starting on Sunday) you do it, the better.

  • To add to what sandycreek said you show your horses to earn HB ( the game money) and some people ( not me) spend real life money on this game.

  • I got interrupted in the midst of my dissertation. *G*

Baya is right, showing horses is a good way to earn game money, though as your stable grows it won't be the profits from placing near the top of the classes that helps, but the points your horses gain for where they place in their classes. Except for the one that comes in last, every horse in a show is awarded points based on what place they fall in and how many horses are in the class. For the most part, the more horses in a class, the more points there are to be awarded. Then, each week at midnight between Saturday and Sunday, during the weekly rollover, you will receive a weekly showing bonus that is equal to 75% of the total number of points your horse has.

You can buy horses from other players but one good way to get a start is to visit the Foundation Rescue, owner 13. All the horses there are the best that foundations can be in both breeding and showing ability, and they add 3 points to their show score each week with training until they level off when they are 9 years old.

You can choose what color or pattern you'd like to breed for, how strictly you cull the foals either by neutering them to make more show horses for your stable or by putting them into the Public Auction, which runs every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. One way to make game money is by putting a stallion and some mares into your pasture and letting them breed, then just auctioning off the foals to add to your bank balance.

We are a very friendly community, so never be afraid to ask specific questions about something you don't understand. We enjoy helping new players get started.

  • P.S. Near the top of the page here in the forum is an announcement from Ammit. She is giving out a New Member Welcome Pack of some added Hajibucks and an extra barn.

  • How do I put tack on the horses? What does it help?
  • If you go to a horse's Control Tab, you will find a link to the tack manager near the bottom of the page, just above the Reroll Image button. When you get there, click on the Catalog to see what's available. You can select something and preview it on the horse. If you like it and can afford it, then buy it. If you don't like it, then click on the x beside the item to cancel it out. You can purchase a number of items this way and tack your horse up as elaborately or as simply as you prefer.

At present, tack is mainly for appearance and doesn't affect show results. Ammit has mentioned that at some point in the future that might change, but hasn't given any time frame for it to happen. She will let us know when it does.

  • Just started today, if a stallion is labeled "inconsistent" , should I geld him?
  • I wouldn't bother. That test only says whether a horse's showing scores will be within a few points or a few more than the horse' actual score.
  • If you are showing by hand it can be hard to tell what an inconsistent horse's score actually is, but if their score swings up in a given show they do pretty well. It's less of a problem now than it used to be, before Ammit created the showing bonus system. Now your horses bring in money each week depending on how many points they have been awarded in their classes.

All the horses in the class except the one that comes in last are awarded points based on where they placed and how many horses are in the class. Only the one that places last gets no points at all. At every weekly roll-over (midnight between Saturday and Sunday), you will receive a showing bonus in addition to your regular weekly pay. At present this is about 75% of the total points all your horses have accumulated. Since the entry fees have been reduced (and the cash payouts which will be more than the entry fee for the top half of the class) there comes a point when the showing bonus will outweigh the profit loss for the horses that don't earn enough in prize money to completely offset the cost to enter them in the show.

So, to go back to your original question, an inconsistent horse whose score swings down may place below the middle of the class and so will lose some of the entry fee. However, if it's not dead last in the class, it will still gain at least half a point and so will increase its contribution to your showing bonus at week's end.
