Snowflake in foundations
  • One of my long term (long, long..) breeding goals is to introduce snowflake. I've got myself two nice het snowflake boys (one bred this year, one bought) and I'm considering the best future options - one being pulling straws to put to foundation mares literally just to see if there are any miraculous het snowflakes hiding in there (then yumming, the mares could then be used to produce nice, even 2nd gen babies).. (I like how I say "mares" plural as if there's going to be all these miraculous het snowflakes hiding in there :)) ) This would be slow progress, but I'm not in any hurry.

My question is, is het snowflake only possible in appaloosa mares, or can it literally be hiding in anything?

My other question is does this sound totally and utterly futile, and would I be better off just crossing nice mares to hom snowflakes?

  • Some players have gotten homo snowflake foal out of a solid colored, non-appy het foundation; so yes, it can be hiding in any horse/genetic line up.
  • Yes it can hide in anything and it would give you a way better shot at finding out if youve got snowflake's if you used a homozygous boy.

However you just got yourself a haj fairy god mother :)) (me if thats not obvious hahaha)

I have a second gen homozygous boy who I can sell you.
aaaand once breeding season starts I may be able to get you a 2g het filly or two. It'll at least help kickstart your line a bit!
  • @MoonAcre do you have any homozygous snowflakes that are chestnut that you might consider parting with?

  • Ah that would be wonderful, thank you! Even just the hom boy would be an excellent boost to get me going!

  • @NorthernStars I might have one next season. I normals get a ton of hom boys. They range in colors but I'll keep an eye out for a chesnut :)
  • Thank you RainTree, I do have a heterozygous liver chestnut stallion, but I'll take a while to get a homozygous guy that way
