Generations
  • How do you figure a foal's generation if one of its parents is 3g or 4g and one is foundation? Would it be the highest or lowest?
  • I personally go by all the generations...so I would class your baby as a 5g. I know a lot of players that breed uneven and will breed a 7g to a foundation, then call the baby a second gen...I would class the baby as an 8g.
It also depends on what their paper level is.
This boys is a little uneven (The grandmare is from the old testing so is classed as a yellow not red)...As the Foal is A papered I class him as a 3G...If he was B papered I would breed him to 2G mares...Basically just breed by paper level when they are a little uneven.

  • I picked up a couple of studs that were a little uneven, but had genes that I wanted. They both look like the line was going down instead of getting better, so I use them to breed mares with the same level as them. But, ok. I'll start labeling them correctly. Thanks!
  • Some people label their generation by what they Paper at (so an uneven B colt would be a 2U, an uneven Blue mare would be a 3U or a 4U). Some people just call them uneven and are done with it (that's me--mine just say U in the suffix). Some go for the highest possible gen. Some go for the lowest possible gen. Some divide the difference by two.

There is no right or wrong way to do this. I would just recommend that you find a system that works for you and stick with it so you know what you're looking at.

  • Technically, in the real world, for most species, you go by the lowest generation. But here in the game, use whatever system works best for you. Labeling by paper level may be a better idea than strictly following generation, for those uneven foals. Or use letters to designate back crosses, if you want a more detailed system.

    For example:
G1 x G2 = G2a ('a' meaning 1 generation gap, this designates the lowest gen parent as G1 and the difference of '1').
G2 x G5 = G3c ('c' meaning 3 generation gap, this designates the lowest gen parent is G2 and the difference of '3')
G2a x G3c = G2a or G2au ('a' meaning 1 generation gap, 'au' meaning 1 generation gap with 1 or more parent also being uneven, depending how detailed you wish to be)

  • I had been labeling them with the lowest, like the era, but then I got to thinking about it and some people really care what generation they are breeding to. Right now, I don't care as much, as long as the stud passed BA. I run the foals through all testing and papering to make sure they are good quality. I know a couple of the studs that I have wouldn't pass SBA, though. At this point I care mostly about breeding evenly with paper level rather than generation.
