Peculiar Silver Black Color
-
I created this mare from a Silver Black mare and she's showing an interesting shade of dark black/red. Her genotype is fairly straight forward so I assume the variation is the result of some hidden gene. Any idea what might be creating the reddish hue?

That is very brown for a silver black. I have this lady who I thought was an odd color for a silver black too. That look a bit similar.

Yours does have a bit of that brown/reddish hue. I saw a couple others similar to yours when searching for the silver black tattoo. But, I think, even the space without the heavy dappling is considerably lighter than yours or the others I saw. At first, I wondered if it was the homozygous pangere, but I've reconsidered that theory.

I've continued to look through other Silver Blacks and have, yet, to solve this puzzle. Any other ideas? Am I correct in concluding that this isn't the result of DP since DP only acts on red based coats?
-
As far as I'm aware this is just a natural variation in expression--a little like flaxen manes and tails can be blondeish, reddish, pinkish or silvery. If you rerolls you should be able to get a more traditional silvery color.
A good test when you are questioning these color variations is to see if the color changes when rerolled. If it does, it's a natural variation. If it doesn't, its genetic in some way! -
Thanks, Cheers. I'm sure you are correct.
One of the primary aspects of this game is that a great deal of life-like variability has been built into its programming. Ammit's earlier horse images (those in use when I started playing in 2011 for HaJ) were all manually programmed and there was some variablity, especially in patterns, but not nearly as much as now. Now she is using a dynamic image generator that uses mathematical formulas to produce the results, which gives wider variability in colors and patterns. (At least this is what I think is involved. I remember Ammit commenting once on Facebook about the struggle she was having with the math while working on one of the patterns or pattern families.)De gustibus non disputandum. Very interesting! I knew there was some variability - I've seen it, especially in roans. But I didn't realize it could effect overall hue as much. I did try rerolling her and saw some of the variation. Thank you!

I remember when the dynamic horse images were released for the very first time since when I first started playing HJ the horses did not have images they just had a blue silhouette of a jumping horse. The very first horse images were just horse heads and while there was some variation in appearance between horses that were the same color, they weren't anywhere near as complex as what we have now. The horse images just get more and more dynamic and realistic as Ammit keeps working on them.

Thanks, Windward. You've been playing a lot longer than I have. I remember seeing the recollection that once there were only horse heads on the game, but I didn't realize that at one time there was only a silhoutte. How this game has grown!De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Impressive! Wonder if anyone has a screen shot of those old images. There should be a history gallery!
-
I started playing a long time ago but I stopped after about 2 or 3 years and only started playing again a few months ago. So there are a lot of people here who've been playing for a greater number of years than I have. I don't think I have the original horse silhouette saved anywhere though. You could add your own image to a horse back then so there were people who did photo manips or drew/painted images with a tablet to make their own custom images for their horses.
Also, I remember that purple was one of the original color names for horses and the Purple Corn Roans and Purple Corn Roan Duns were 2 of the most desirable colors. Corn referred to the dark spots you sometimes see on roans. When the dynamic horse heads were introduced, the purple horses no longer existed any more, I think they became Brown instead. And corn was dropped from the name since you were able to see the dark spotting on the roans. We've come so far with the horse images and genetics since Ammit keeps putting more hard work into making them look so wonderful! When I decided that I wanted to play HJ again, I was absolutely blown away by how lifelike the horse images were.
A history gallery would be really interesting. I'm not on HJ1 any more but I know some of the people there have been playing since the game first started, so I wonder if some of them have images stored away on their computers. I don't know if the original forum is still functional but I bet a lot of older announcements are archived on there if it's still around. I don't remember the URL though, I just know it was totally separate from HJ and was a different website.
