  • She's heterozygous brown (At) which is quite dark. Homozygous brown is quite light, but het brown is very very dark with a lighter belly just like this foal. The coloration is similar normally expressed or with the cream (buckskin) dilution.
  • So she isnt a mutant lol jk

  • Nope. I'm pretty sure she got her dad's DP, which is having a pretty dramatic effect, but she's not a mutant!
  • I've never understood why het brown is so much darker than hom brown. Logically, I think it would make sense for hom brown to be darker than het brown and not the other way around, but that isn't the case and I'm not sure why.
  • I know eh? I also just got another similar filly but this time she is roan... I dont have the hbs to test her but I know she is cream brown roan. So another black buckskin I guess lol.

  • I've got some really nice darks this season, but a super dark buckskin is my absolute favourite!

    We have these two little ladies who I bred yesterday;

    Brown

    Ahh, so precious <3 Your girl will probably end up looking a lot like my buckskin boy! I've just woken up so brains not with it, but I think he was a hom dp, hom sooty, one At which had made him look so dark. It would be interesting if he got another At since I think he might have been a touch darker again.<br />

  • @Bourbon I think I remember reading that het At is dark, but hom At is lighter.

  • @ObsidianKitsune Oh my gosh really? It's already thrown me a wobble with blood wild bays being dp OTL

  • I'm fairly sure that brown works the way it does because the action of all the agouti genes is to restrict the black pigment to the points. They take black away from the body, rather than adding it. A+ and A cause strong enough restriction of the black that one copy has the full effect, but At is relatively weak and two copies of it have a cumulative effect, causing homozygous brown to have less black than heterozygous brown.

    This guy is buckskin too. I was very surprised, thought he was just a dark brown!
