Culling mares
  • I have been struggling with what to use as a standard to cull mares, especially with the ExP's in the game. This year I had to clear out some pasture space so I used the following standards for culling mares greater than 7 years old.

    Gen 1 Mares (Yellow.Red)
    Reg Creates - AFPT 10.0
    ExP Mares - AFPT 10.5
    Gen 2 Mares (Red/Blue)
    Reg Create lines - AFPT - 10.5
    1 Exp Parent - AFPT - 10.8
    2 Exp Parent - AFPT - 11
    Gen 3 Mares (Blue)
    Regular Create lines - 11
    ExP lines - 11.4
    Gen 4 Mares (Blue/Gold)
    Regular Create lines - 11.4
    ExP lines - 11.8
    Gen 5 Mares (Gold)
    Regular Create lines - 11.8?
    ExP lines - 12.2?
    Gen 6 Mares (Gold)
    Regular Create lines - 12.2?
    ExP lines - 12.6?
    Gen 7 Mares (Gold)
    Regular Create lines - 12.6?
    ExP lines - 13.0?

Point 5 increase in gen 2 and 3 seems doable, maybe even up to Gen 4, but I am not sure it is sustainable. I have been thinking about using a .4 increase once PTs are greater than 11. Are the above goals reasonable/too easy/too hard? What do the more Sr players use for higher Gen AFPTs culling guidelines?

Also thinking of blending the two lines ExP/Reg by Gen 4 or 5. So far I have not had to make that decision.

    Advice welcome.
  • I can't help you with the ExP vs regular lines question, as I haven't yet decided what I'm going to do about that yet.

If you are able to pasture breed everything with the full bonus, I think your goals through gen 5 are fully doable.

I seem to remember I followed your general goals here. I think I was planning to increase to a 0.5 PT increase as I could reach it with each generation, but had also planned to initially require only a 0.4 PT increase after 11.0. Once you're up at gen 4 and 5 you will really start to see where your mares are weak. Tweaking your stallion quality at gen 3 (I had a ridiculous problem getting a good increase in quality there) seemed to totally open the floodgates for me and suddenly I was breeding really really high quality gen 4 colts. I assume my fillies were equally high quality, but that was before mare Papering at birth. I was struggling to get Gold gen 5s though and think I needed another couple seasons to get those high quality gen 4 mares into the herd.

I think unless you have lines (not the rare individual, but entire lines) that are 100% regular quality or 100% boosted, by gen 5 and up you could definitely expect everyone to meet the same standard. Gen 4 may still be a bit early--you will definitely have the potential to get Stars and Golds from minimally boosted lines (just one boosted ancestor at the foundation generation) but I'm not hearing about Stars or Golds from 100% regular create lines at that generation.
  • Thanks Cheers. I started with the standards you had, then tweaked them based on what I was observing with my ExP mares. I am setting up a pure ExP line. Up until now I have been mixing them, going forward I am going to separate them and see how that goes.

I am getting Golds/Stars at Gen 5, the rare one at Gen 4 - of course these are mostly from your lines. I am separating out the mares that have produced these Stars and golds into a separate pasture hoping that will allow me to identify superior mares. With the compare feature, stallions are easier.
