What happened with Lethality?
-
Ok, so most of you probably know that I try to stay away from white almost entirely, so I am rather safe in that aspect and am not really sure exactly how the different genes interact for different white factors. Have a pair of KP horses, so they kinda twisted my arm a bit. Thought they were safe gene combinations they had a healthy foal. This year the foal had too much white. I know I have white genes all over the place, but kinda have to with KP. Was this an unlucky coincidence, or is this really an unsafe pairing?

Breeding W2 and Sabino, plus the addition of W20 which enhances the white factor, can be a risky cross yes.
-
Same thing happened to me. I think its the Pax3 crossed with the w2. One season I had a good foal next deceased.
-
Ammit said that we would sort of be able to look at two parents and know if they would be a good match based on how much White the parents showed. Your stallion is basically whited out, which means he's more likely to pass high White factor to his kids. You add in extra genes like splash and this is a risky combo.
-
Sorry, posted them in weird order. It is the mare that is whited out. How do I find a stud for her that doesn't defeat the purpose of KP by not contributing white?
-
Apparently start by finding a new boy without white 2? Are there any KP breeders who do roans? lol
-
Hold on I she 2g?
-
There certainly may be some, but I don't breed for KP, so I don't know for sure.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Ammit never gave an answer on whether or not KP affects white factor, but I'm thinking that KP probably increases a horse's white factor. I bred two hom KP bone fire mares to my hom KP Nanotech stud and I got one foal with an extensive white factor and one dead foal (it had to have had w2, w20, and extensive white factor in order to die). The stallion and both mares all have minimal white factor, so I'm thinking KP has to increase white factor in order to get 2 extensive white factor foals from those pairings.
-
Ok, and he has dun too. :) I might have to contact you next month if I don't secumb to temptation and try this fateful match again. -_- LOL
-
So how do people breed KP then, if they need two genes and KP increases it? She does have a lot of white for medium factor. Do people just accept that many of their foals die?
-
If you avoid w1, w2, w3, and w10, you won't have any chance of a dead foal even if it has an extensive white factor. I wish I had realized that KP probably increases white factor before I GMTd my 2 Bonefire mares because I gave them each a copy of roan and w20 since I thought I wouldn't end up with any extensive white factor foals. I guess now I'll have to spend 2 more GMTs to change their w20 to roan so I won't end up with any more dead foals since my KP stud has w2.
-
I dont think KP increases it at all... and if it does its only a tiny bit.
-
We can't know for sure since Ammit never gave an answer on it, so to be safe I'd assume that KP does increase white factor. Better to be cautious and find out that it wasn't necessary than to take the risk and end up with a bunch of dead foals.
-
It is the w20 that tends to increase the white factors on horses, I have noticed. I don't know about KP, but if I was breeding some horses with lethal genes, I try to avoid w20 with them.
-
W20 was created precisely to increase the amount of white on a horse regardless of its source-Kit mutations, Splash mutations, even Rabicano, I believe.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

No we cant know for sure but Ive got horses with barely any white on them that are homozygous for KP. And the ones that are heterozygous, same thing. It wouldnt really make sense for KP to increase white factor. Just be careful when you cross your KP horses because the kit genes are whats tricky.
