SBA Doesn't like me...
  • I just got a premium account, and I've been deciding what my philosophies were going to be on using SBA. So far I've accidentally spayed a mare whom gives me A/Blue papered horses.

(Anybody have any ideas on why she was spayed anyway?)

And the stud that I found so pretty I went and bought like 5 expro mares for. (Oh well, I was a bit suspicious of his quality anyway. I'll just keep an eye out anyway for another similiarly colored. Maybe I can find a taller one)

So far I'm not off to a great start with SBA... I think I've decided I will use it on all 1G, mares I'm on the fence with and all stallions. At least until I have a larger herd. I admit I don't think I will use it as much as some people. I'm a sucker for the pretty ones, and a good herd can be built from just BA.

Oh, and the mare that I just bought to go in my show horse breeding program. (Should've put her on no testing - pretty sure she was going to get altered)

I guess I need to double check whose in the barn first. LOL.

  • I just ran everything through, barely lost many horses but then again I've been keeping a good rein on my stock and have been very ruthless before I got it. As for your three horses;

First mare probably got spayed on her inconsistency. She's considerably more inconsistent than her mom.

Stallion was likely just a mediocre producer. SBA tests all foundies against a pretty high benchmark.

Last mare isn't as good as her dad, so she was doomed for the snip. Her dam was mismatched in quality to her sire :)

EDIT: I got really lucky with my show line, I bred the mismatched founder to a similar paper to herself and managed to get a mare out of her that past SBA. So I have an uneven line which is still breedable!

  • Well thank you. Wish she would have been kept unaltered. Inconsistency doesn't bother me, because as I understand it, that means she will produce some which are better than normal. Even if you have to pay with some lower quality ones.

As far as the 2nd one, I guess its for the better anyway. I can try to find something a step up in quality.

As for the 3rd one, next time I'll just be more careful. She wasn't my favorite, favorite anyway. Talk about extreme mismatch on those two.

  • Inconsistency is to do with showing which is why inconsistent horses have slightly lower PT scores. Inconsistent horses are more likely to produce inconsistent foals as well, who can swing from showing really well to really badly. As far as I'm aware it doesn't produce foals which can be better than normal with breeding ability, each foal has a randomly generated chance to be better or worse than their parents and siblings :)

  • Ok, that makes sense to me. But then why would it help her to fail with SBA? Was she just really that much lower quality? But if that's the case why does she throw A/Blue

Wow, that's cool on your uneven line!

You can imagine my excitement when she papered like that! Every season since I've bred her to a Star stallion up for public brood. Got these beauties.

    Like this one's height

This ones color (wish I would have remembered to turn of his testing too)

And of course some of her sons are old enough to start breeding so I've been looking for ladies for them. (That's what I bought White Hawk for)

Next season I hope to pull eggs from her.

  • Awe im sorry well at least you'll have pretty show horses..SBA does not like me either haha although my show bonus is big because of SBA lol
  • Yea, you're right. The show bonus is certainly nice to have.

  • ooh, sorry about Tagamon. Her sire is a high gen colt I got from Dark Star and I haven't found a single mare yet that can throw intact foals with him with the new testing system. Since his descendants test better and produce better offspring than all my other horses I have just stopped doing advise on them at all since they are better quality than my other horses. Forgot you had her or I would have warned you.
  • I will buy her back if you would like. I would try to unaltered her eventually and put her with my other solemn daughters since she is the best filly I have gotten from her sire.
  • @Wildland Acres

Thank you so much! Actually Tagamon is still good! Triple checked for that, she's like my favorite horse ever. It was just the date that I bought for her sons (White Hawk) that was altered.

  • Oh good! I was really worried for a moment. She passed sba? Or did she not go through it? If she did I am shocked and will be looking at her siblings to try to determine when I am brave enough to start testing them again.
  • I don't even want to try... LOL. I think I turned off testing for her (will double check that). But even passing BA is amazing!!

I love her sooo much. Thank you for selling her to me. You can see all of the pretty guys she has given me, and now grandchildren. And now I hope to pull eggs from her now that I have a premium. Its amazing that she's a solid color but always seems to throw loud babies.

If you ever do want her back, let me know. Or an egg from her.

  • Would you be interested in fillies might get from that line next month? I don't have white 8, but hopefully similar quality. (Can't say anything about passing sba though, I probably wouldn't do it with them because the line is unevenly bred to increase overall herd quality)
  • Sure, I would be happy to. Although as you can tell... I've bred her every year and only get stallions... Really wish she would toss a filly or two in there.

  • It is all right, keep her. I just worried she was snipped. I might be interested in an egg, need to get things sorted out with gmt tokens though. Have a major project going on, plus want to add mothers sooty plus and take tobiano off of her brother.

  • Wow, another cutie from your stallion.

Sounds like a cool project. I really really like the KP I put on my stars and Stripes mare, that's turning into a fun project. But now there's a pretty Yules Log mare that I wish I could buy and put KP on. But unfortunately I can't afford to buy the horse probably, much less invest in more KP.

  • Yep. GMT is a slippery slope...
  • I'm not sure, but I think I would have to add 2 Kit genes anyway.

  • SBA tests a horse across all of it's abilities which is why it will snip on inconsistencies. A horse that is significantly a better shower than a breeder will be snipped by SBA as well. It's like the regular breeding advice but with even tighter guidelines on what gets through.

It will only allow horses to pass through that are either the same quality or better than their parents with breeding ability and consistency. My guess with why it snips inconsistent horses is that an inconsistent horse can throw inconsistent foals with lower AFPT who have an even greater chance of swinging very low in show and be a waste of space. Instead of breeding horses who are good showers, good breeders and have good consistency you're almost going backwards if you let the showing ability slip with a horse who could statistically show terribly all his life.

  • Ok, thank you. That makes sense. I always wondered why it factored in inconsistency when inconsistency is a preference in a way.

  • Oh no, by first brindle that passed BA. Oh well she papered yellow and I had rejected her until I noticed the brindle.
