Buddy Chat: Quality Stud Breeding
-
Trying to start a group for people with great quality studs such as PT 11 with a test score A and above. This will be for people who are trying to build up to that *star quality stud. Since that's what my goal is. I'll only invite people who PM me with image of stud so we don't get a massive mix of studs. If anyone is interested it will be a private group

And I think 4th gen would be appropriate too?
-
Let me know if this is a good group to start and if I should alter anything

PT doesn't matter for intact horses. Has nothing to do with their breeding ability :)Owner Of Bellwether Farm

Well my goal is to have great intact showing horses :)

A horse with a high PT won't necessarily produce foals with a high PT when you breed it. A horse's breeding ability is what determines the quality of its foals and PT is not related to breeding ability. The Top Notch Producer herd helper gives you foundations that are guaranteed to have 100% breeding ability, which is equivalent to the breeding ability of a perfect foundation. However, top notch producers will have a random PT score because that is not related to their breeding ability. Here are some top notch producer foundations mares that are consistent and have a PT score of 0.3. Their breeding ability is identical to a perfect foundation even though perfect foundations have a 9.9 PT score. You won't see PT scores anywhere near this low on quality lined horses but the basic idea is still that PT and breeding ability are two different things. Now, average foal PT is related to breeding ability but a horse's AFPT and its PT are two very different things.

If you haven't read this thread yet, I highly suggest you do so. It does a really good job of explaining the difference between breeding and showing ability. There's also an explanation of AFPT there as well.

Would star horses work too? Since that is the hurtle I am finally going over. I don't look at pt score of my studs, but they do go up. Also, is this only for fourth gen? Kinda confused about what the difference between this and using the search are.

The average PT score should increase a bit with each generation i.e. your 5th generation foals should not be getting a 9.1 PT score, but just because a horse has a high PT score does not mean it will be a good breeder. If you're curious about what paper levels your geldings and spayed mares have, you can paper a gelded or spayed horse for free and you are charged 0 hbs instead of 1000 hbs.
For example, this spayed mare has an 11.6 PT but only papered yellow.

This intact 2G mare I own only has a 9.7 PT but she papered Blue. She is a much better breeder than the previous mare (as you can see from her paper level) even though her PT score is much lower.

Okay this makes more sense. So my goal here is to start producing the +12 PT scores with the *star breeding. How do I work on this? Because I want to keep them intact. I know I have to start with balance foundations and generations. So I'm starting to produce my 2nd gens from ex pros, RS, and perfect foundation. All my studs are RS. Would this be a good way to start? I've done the reading but I just don't seem to understand it all 100% but I know I have to have balance gens to help boost the breeding test and and the PT

I use foal pt to determine mare quallity, and I comparison test studs and use the better ones for each generation. Since I have already weeded out till the best colts I usually don't look at average foal pt on them, but the mares I do because I don't have the comparison test.

Yeah I've been testing them all and I've only gotten 1 colt out of the bunch this season that hasn't been snipped he's definitely better than the mother so I'm keeping him till he ages up then I'll use home for my 3rd gen
