Dapples
-
How do you get dapples? Where in the gene are they? and how do they work as far as passing them on to foals?
-
They're sort of random. They can appear on any color dark enough to show them but they are more common on silvers, and it seems like sooty horses show them more, to me.
Sometimes, if you reroll a horse's image, you'll get dapples on a horse that didn't have them. You can do that on its control panel page. Each reroll costs 100 hbs. No guarantee on that, but I've had it happen. -
Also not sure I've seen a dappled black. Has anyone else?
-
Well that's disappointing. I like the dapples I was hopping I could breed for them.
-
You can, kind of... just breed silver blacks. :) Here's a mare to get you started. She's a little older, but she will give you a foal or two.

Also, there's a gene called Sooty+ that gives a dapply look that's a little different, and it also seems to enhance the other kind of dapples when they're present. It's my favorite gene.
-
Thank you for the mare. So, if I breed her to a sooty stallion I'll probably have a good chance of getting a nice dapple?
-
Oooh, if you like bays, you could breed her to Cheers' stud Weekend Wishes. The dapples should still show, and he's as close to a free public stud as you can get.
-
Well if you want silver black specifically, you should look for a silver black stallion, specifically EE in his genetics, and ZZ (homozygous silver) if you can find it. There are some silver blacks for public stud, or you could just breed to black, you'd still get silver.
Rose is right though, Weekend Wishes would make some mighty pretty silver brown babies, and then you'd have Sooty+ as well as the dapples, if he passes it on (and also a chance of satin). You'd be guaranteed to get silver brown splash if you bred to him (because the mare is a rank special Silver Pocket Watch, she's EE aa ZZ SpSSpS -- homozygous for extension/black, silver and splash).
Hope that makes sense :) Depends on whether you want black or brown. -
Do post what you get, whatever you breed to, I'd love to see.

-
Yes please, I want to see, too. :D

Here is what I got. He's really pretty. I love his markings and blue eyes but he tested inconsistent and papered C so per her breeding rules I had to geld him. He will go up for sale because I don't have room to keep altered animals but I can try again next breeding season :)

Aww, that's too bad, he's cute.
-
I'm watching some auction on some 2gen dapples at auction too. This will probably be my first pattern I start actively breeding for. I think it's so pretty. The rest of my herd to so mish mashed and a little bit of everything that I think is pretty lol. I'm sure I will slowly start pulling out and deciding what colors I want to actively breed for.
-
Bummer :(
We had a rank special herd helper, Silver Pocket Watch, last Christmas season (where that mare came from). Maybe there will be another one this year. I hope so, they're one of my favorite rank specials. -
Oh FJ, that's a total bummer! I hate he didn't paper out for you.
-
He's still cute :)

so are the dapples a sign of a DP carrier, possible sooty+ or just of the sooty gene?
for example, I know the following foal is most likely going to be liver based on his parents:
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=345941
but what about this girl?:
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=345940
will she be a possible DP carrier as well because of her sire? -
As far as I know, dapples and the "special" darkening genes have no direct relationship. I have horses I know carry DP or Sooty+ with no visible dapples, and horses I'm pretty sure have no special genes with extensive dappling. I do think silvers and the various darkening genes do have a higher proportion of dapples, but that's purely anecdotal.
For instance, I know this mare has heterozygous DP and homozygous sooty, but no dapples.
This girl has sooty but no other special genes and extensive dapplesThanked by 1smswiere -
Oh, and your bay splash filly might carry DP because Wind Singer does...but it's hard to tell for sure...
-
As far as I know, dapples are a random possibility in most colors and patterns now. Some dapples are lighter than the base coat color, some are darker. S+ used to be markedly dappled, especially on horses with dilution genes, but when I reroll them now, they tend to lose that special coloration that made S+ easy to identify. Here are a few examples from my HaJ 1 account.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Dapples are random but I see them a lot more on Sooty and DP horses.
I hadn't noticed that S+ is less dapply now... hmmm.
