Need Advice: Spay, Keep, or Sell?
-
I have not perfected my culling criteria yet, so I'm trying to decide what to do with these five mares. Three are G3 and two are G4 and all nicely colored. I have not been able to assess their breeding capabilities yet since they are only yearlings and I lack the funds to paper them. Their PT scores are a bit low for my tastes in a G3 and G4 but I'd hate to see them yummed.
I could spay them and make them good show horses since a couple of them are already gaining a profit in the show ring. But selling them could provide funds for new creates which could help me in forming my future herds. I've had to cull a few of my inferior foundations so my foundation herd is lacking now. I could keep them since they are pretty girls, but I'm not keen on breeding for color without quality and their quality is in question.
Also I have a herd Helper that has 2 hours left on it and I'd really like to pop that last create on it, but I'm 1500hbs too short.
What would you do?
G3 Irish Red
TBG G3 Fortune
G3 Gold Spot
TBG G4 Dreama

Thank you so much Kalilm. But I'm still curious. The question still stands, what would you do?Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

I'd keep them intact until you can find out what they are. I've had some gems who I would have snipped otherwise. I actually gelded my first *star stallion since I didn't bother to paper him before I gelded. It still hurts!

Oh I've felt that pain. I snipped two B stallions based on AFPT. Though... I have more B stallions than I thought I would so maybe that was a good thing.
And good grief, I'd cry so hard especially since I love grays.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

I would hang onto the three 3G draft fillies until I papered them. If they papered Blue I would keep them intact and if they papered Red or below I would snip them and put them in my show string. I'm pretty strict with my lines so I would spay the two 4G WB fillies and put them in my show string. Their parents are 3G B and Red papered, and I expect my 3G horses to be at least A and Blue, so I personally would spay/geld their parents as well. Also, you seem to breed for Drafts and not WBs so that might be another reason to snip the WB mares.
