Are livers really worth so much??
  • I had 2 liver mares in private auction house. Both second gens.. One black chestnut one just liver. I sold them both as they were inconsistent and i have a few liver mares to breed next season so figured livers are easy enough to get..
Well one sold for 63000hb the other 61000hb..

Are they really worth that or did someone just really want my girls?? I thought it was an insane price to pay!

  • Yeah, someone really wanted them. Yay for you! But they're fairly common all things considered. Obviously black chestnuts are rarer than plain livers, but they aren't hard to breed, particularly if you have planned a herd specifically to get them.
  • 60k :O

  • They can pull a hefty price if the right person or people want them bad enough. I have two whole herds built around breeding black chestnut. If I find a foundation of good quality to replace one I already have that's not so good you better bet I'm grabbing it up no matter what the cost. That can pay off nicely for the owner if two people like myself are looking at the same horse. I don't sell my babies for anywhere near the price I pay to put my herd together. It's all for my pure enjoyment. Breeders like myself don't normally sell our foals either. We guard our lines pretty carefully. I think the line is more important than the color really. The color is pretty common and can pop up just about anywhere but to get a good foal from a carefully guarded line can really help someone out who wants to breed the color and strive for good horses. I find the enjoyment from working from the ground up and putting in a lot of work to breed good foals. My SO has even started asking me how my breeding is going lol. I also like giving people pretty show ponies in a color they might really like but don't want to breed too. It's all fun.
  • They are also both young enough that someone could GMT them to consistent. Consistency is pretty low on the list of things I worry about, others may feel the same.

  • It's probably also to do with the fact that they're mares. Most people sell the liver stallions they don't want but keep the mares that they have. But to think, I sell my 2G livers for 3-4k!

  • Wow! That is pricey!

I know DP is rather popular right now (more so than usual) but like the others already mentioned, with a bit of herd planning they aren't difficult to come across. When I keep up with my breeding I can usually get at least 5-10 intact, decent quality livers per season.

Lucky duck though, someone paying more than what most RS go for. 3:-O we don't have a duck emote so here's a cow instead

  • The short answer is they are worth whatever someone will pay for them. In this instance, yes, they were worth that much. :)

  • Did they have other patterns as well? I could see someone paying that much if they were brindle or had snowflake, satin, or some other fairly uncommon genes. Otherwise, you got really lucky and someone really wanted your mares. :D You can easily find 2G red papered liver mares for sale for 5k or less on the public sales board, especially if you don't mind inconsistency or are willing to use a GMT to make them consistent. Black liver is harder to find so I can see that mare selling for more, but 60k for a regular liver mare seems very overpriced unless she had some other uncommon genes.
  • Yeah i do understand that which is the main reason i sold them.. i dont want to use inconsistent horses unless they are super special but purchasing barns are more important to me at the moment then changing consistency..
I was just really shocked at how high the price went and just wasnt sure if it was the norm for livers put in auction
