Breeding
  • I just joined and I had bred two of my mares (http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=947676 and http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=933312) with one of my stallion (http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=933316). Both of the foals failed the breeding advice and were spayed and gelded. I was wondering how the testing works, and how to pick the best mare and stallion so next time their foal will not be automatically spayed/gelded. My goal in the future is to hopefully become really good at breeding and produce top quality horses.
  • Basically the Breeding Advice testing looks at how the foal compares to its parents - if it's significantly worse than them, it will fail the test and get snipped. Just because a foal fails testing doesn't necessarily mean that the stallion and mare pair are poor breeders though, because there is still an element of chance involved.

Looks like your mares are both Exceptional Producers so they have 105% breeding ability, and your stallion is a (non ExPro) Rank Special, so he has 100% breeding ability (same as Perfect Foundations). So I would definitely try to breed him to those mares again.

One thing you can do to increase your chances of producing better foals (that will pass testing) is to keep your mares in your pasture. Mares held in a pasture will accumulate a "pasture bonus" each day that they're in there, for a maximum of 30 days. (If you move a mare back to the barn for even just a second, she will lose her bonus and have to start over.) The pasture bonus basically just allow a mare to throw foals from the higher end of her range of possible breeding ability.

  • First of all, welcome to HAJ! Your horses are very cute.

Breeding Advice tests the foals against both of its parents. If the foal is slightly worse, as good as, or better than its parents, it will pass the test.

Strict Breeding Advice (Upgrades only!) will only pass foals that are as good as or better than its parents.

Someone else will need to confirm this as I'm not sure if I'm right, but while your mares are Exceptional Producers, I believe your King's Ransom stallion is only a perfect foundation. This means your mares have 105% breeding ability while your stallion "only" has 100% breeding ability. This pairing is not even and therefore may result in less intact foals, but again, I'm not sure about this!

One thing you should know about breeding is that both the sire and dam have a "range" of potential to give to their foal. It is possible for them to both give very good potential, or very bad potential. This is all luck. To get the best quality foals, you should leave your mares in your pasture. You'll notice as time goes on, they will accrue "Pasture Days" until 30 days, at which point it will simply read "30+". SandyCreekFarm best explained how those work:

"Every day a mare remains in the pasture, a little virtual slider creeps up, hiding a few points from the bottom of her breeding ability range. This continues for 30 days. When she is removed from the pasture, that virtual slider disappears, and the whole range is once again active.

The practical result is that her potential contribution to her foal's abilities now comes from the top end of her range. Her foals are more likely to have a higher PT score and also to have the best breeding ability possible."

This is a link that may have the answers to many of your questions. It contains a lot of helpful and in depth information.

Hope to see you around more on the forum and happy breeding!

  • Since your mares are exceptional producers and have 105% breeding ability, you may have better luck breeding them to an exceptional producer or exceptionally perfect stallion, because he will also have 105% breeding ability.

  • Ok! I think I am starting to understand this! Thank you for explaining :)
  • Something that no one has mentioned yet is that neutered horses get a boost to their training. It isn't a huge difference, but over the game years of the horse's life it can amount to a significant difference. One noticeable advantage is that neutered horses train about a game year longer than intact ones before leveling off so that each training only adds a tiny fraction of a point to their show score each time.

The primary money making part of the game is the showing bonus, based on points awarded to each horse in a show (except the one that comes in last). The higher the horse places, the more points it earns. Horses keep these showing points throughout their life, even when they change owners. Each night a the midnight roll-over, you will be given a showing bonus that is one seventh of 75% of the total number of points your horses possess. As your stable grows, and you acquire more older horses that have advanced farther up the showing ladder, this can amount to significant numbers of hajibucks, every night of the game!

In short, neutered horses are your friends and the financial platform upon which your stable will stand. It's always hard when a beautifully marked foal or new create gets neutered, but it will be, if you hang onto it, an even greater boon to your game than if it had remained intact. Ammit, the game's creator, has suggested that 10 neutered horses to every 1 intact horse is a good ratio to strive for.

  • Couldn't find this anywhere else, so I'll ask here. Does this game have a penalty for breeding close relatives together? I know it's a bad idea IRL, but I can't find mention anywhere about a detriment in the game.

    Thanks!
  • Nope! A lot of horses on this game are inbred, some users don't mind it, some do. In this game it's personal preference.
  • Ammit has not yet programmed in the genetic weaknesses that can come with some genes like silver and appaloosa, so there is no danger in breeding close relatives.

  • With no intent too. It would not add any fun to the game. :)
