I need help culling
-
I am trying my best to cull my 2G liver stallions. I've already done the comparison testing and the remaining horses are superior to sire and they're all as good as each other. So, it doesn't make it easy to cull any further. Any other ideas? Who would you cull?

Do want the appy gene? The Tobiano? If not cull it and keep what you want. That's how I cull!
-
At this point I would go by PT and color. Maybe only keep the black livers and the flashy ones.
-
Maybe AFPT of parents? Or which ones you have a gut feeling you like more? Or maybe offer some up for sale? Do you like the solids or the colorful? I see 2 in there I am in love with. LOL. Maybe just try them out and see how it goes. A different one every season or something, its always cool to have slighly different horses, and although we don't care about inbreeding that much here its always cool to see different horses in the pedigree and go "oh yea, I remember that horse"Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

1). Two have frame, and frame is lethal when homozygous. If you have frame in your liver herd mares, I would get rid of the colts that have it (or GMT it off if one of the is your favorite).
2). Some players, when in your situation, snip the stallions with the highest PT since they will be better show ponies and they all seem to have the same breeding ability. You could consider using this method.
3). The black livers will always pass on a copy of DP...if you want to continue breeding for liver/black liver, these boys give you the best chance.
4). I personally get bored breeding too many horses that look the same. I would be inclined to keep the stallions with patterns, but that's just my preference. Alternatively, there is something nice about having pretty simple stallions and a herd of mares with lots of patterns so you get a foal crop with lots of different patterns... I don't think you can go wrong either way...but you might want to consider how loud or quiet your mare herd is if you're considering culling based on patterns or lack thereof. -
For my I always try and choose a homo DP stallion because I'll keep a few het DP mares and by gen three I only keep homo DP so that's one way I make cuts. Deciding where you want your line to go will help you make cuts. I also don't like Pangere in my liver lines so I slowly start culling for that. In fact I culled for color so hard in my first DP line I started a whole new line for Liver with color and purposely looked for foundies that I could use with appy and splash for my Liver with flare line lol Having an idea of where you want to go and what you want your line to look like when your done will help you. Another thing you can do is cull for PT purposely snip those really high boys and turn them into show ponies. Those high pt's will help bring in cash and not only help pay for their testing but for all those other stallions as well.
-
I'd pay 12k, or whatever all of the testing you do plus 3000 (whichever is more) for this guy. That would take one guy off your hands... LOL. Although he is gorgoeus so I would understand keeping him.

@HunterUnderSaddleGirl I was just drooling over him, too and about to offer! lol
@RedDeeFarms I'm also really in love with
2lvr superior to sire3
I think you should first look at the ones you personally bred. Do you want a stud to continue those lines? Do you plan on breeding that combination more and keeping mares? What direction do you want that line to go?
For the horses you bought, do you remember why? Are the genes something you want to introduce into your herd?
And for the ones you decide to cull, do you want a new show pony? Or are they headed for auction? -
@SeldomSeen yea I was planning on not doing it, but I was too obsessed over him and asked anyway! He is exactly what I wanted. The crazy spots like I like, and I'm on a new liver chestnut kick, and bought a bunch of chestnut mares (my stud likes to make liver chestnuts when in combo with chestnuts) so wanted to start on it now. LOL. I also liked the tobyBreeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
-
@hunterundersaddlegirl - I absolutely LOVE that draft stallion. If He was something I bred
I would hold on to him. So, I'll accept your offer since I HAVE to cull my horses and I
am so poor right now lol What other horse were you interested in? I'll see if I'll sell too. I've added
you to my chat and he is up for you.
@Cheers - I have a good amount of 2g fillies that have frame. That's a really good point. I always do
the pasture breeding so it's random. I'll check to see which frame I like (if any) and go from there.
I never thought about gelding the top PT and keep as a show pony. That's a great idea. I also agree
that I get bored when I have too many "plain" horses. I love color, I love pizzaz!
@fj1482 - I really want to have dark/black livers. You and Cheers mentioned culling the highest PT. I think
I'll end up doing that as well. So far I have culling high PT, frames, and ones I haven't bred in house.
@Seldomseen - you brought up a good point. Why did I buy these other ones? My honest answer is so I could have
another horse for my line. I'm still working on patience lol It's not because of anything else. So, I'm really
glad you actually brought that up. It was kind of in the back of my head and I do believe I'm going to sell
the ones I've purchased unless it can bring something different to my line. I am not sure I'm going to sell that guy yet.
I have to look at all my studs I've bred and see what I can cull from there. Is there another you're interested in?
-
With everyone's advice I went through and made my first cull attempt. I've marked 8 horses to be culled so far. I'm not sure if I'll auction, sell, or keep for show horses.
-
Awesome, thank you, I will pick him up right after the auction. I also liked the Toby.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
-
If they have high pt, why not alter and keep as a show horse? Would be cheaper than buying, me thinks!Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
@RedDeeFarms This one? How much would you sell him for? Don't ask me how much I'm thinking, I'm still fairly new and getting a handle on value.
-
I would keep 2liver cull8 since he's dark and prety. Seems like a good Stud as well.Owner Of Bellwether Farm

@jordank I tested him (apparently i forgot) and he was worse than another horse I had from the same stud. If prefer to keep him but I need to better the lines:(
