PT/AFPT and Breeding Bonus Questions
  • Two questions!

    1. If PT has nothing to do with breeding ability, how does AFPT determine a mare's breeding ability? For example, if you have something like a perfect foundation mare, so good breeding ability and good showing ability, she could produce a foal that has great breeding ability and mediocre showing ability, which might have a lower PT score and therefore reduce her AFPT, but she produced a good foal nonetheless. There must be more to the equation, can somebody explain it to me?

    2. Somewhat simpler question! Where does a mare's breeding bonus take effect? Does it add to her breeding ability percentage or does it affect the foal's abilities directly?

    Thank you in advance <3
  • The answer to your first question is that AFPT stands for average foal PT. Yes, sometimes a horse produces a nice foal with great breeding ability but lower showing ability and a lower PT. But that same horse should also give you some foals that have lower breeding ability but great showing ability and a higher PT. That's why AFPT becomes more accurate as a horse has more foals, because on average a horse that producers great showers should also produce great breeders and vice versa.
  • @fracasse, for both of your questions, I enjoy looking back at this thread frequently to remind myself how breeding vs showing potential works. I'm more inclined to understand a picture than lots of words, but this thread does a fabulous job with both images and descriptions.

Addressing the second question specifically, direct quote from SandycreekFarm:
"Every day a mare remains in the pasture, a little virtual slider creeps up, hiding a few points from the bottom of her breeding ability range. This continues for 30 days. When she is removed from the pasture, that virtual slider disappears, and the whole range is once again active.

The practical result is that her potential contribution to her foal's abilities now comes from the top end of her range. Her foals are more likely to have a higher PT score and also to have the best breeding ability possible."

EDIT: A link to the thread with SandycreekFarm explaining pasture questions
