@fracasse, for both of your questions, I enjoy looking back at this thread frequently to remind myself how breeding vs showing potential works. I'm more inclined to understand a picture than lots of words, but this thread does a fabulous job with both images and descriptions.

Addressing the second question specifically, direct quote from SandycreekFarm:
"Every day a mare remains in the pasture, a little virtual slider creeps up, hiding a few points from the bottom of her breeding ability range. This continues for 30 days. When she is removed from the pasture, that virtual slider disappears, and the whole range is once again active.

The practical result is that her potential contribution to her foal's abilities now comes from the top end of her range. Her foals are more likely to have a higher PT score and also to have the best breeding ability possible."
