Every letter of the Alphabet
  • The Fact that I have horses named with every letter of the alphabet definitely means I have to many :D I will continue this trend and keep up my alphabetical naming. Anyone else have this going?
  • Haha - I don't do this with my horses here, but I do this at work. We bring rescued dogs into a women's prison and train them in obedience and service work. We name them alphabetically, so I know what order they came in. I think we're on the 7th trip through the alphabet since we started this.

Some letters get tough! Especially Q, U and X!
  • Thats cool :) Ultra - U
    Quiver - Q
    Xavier - X
I don't know though I can come up with some random names. I also use Korean/Asian names (Mostly Korean and Chinese) for the awkward letters

  • Xylophone and XRay could both be good for ribby, underfed dogs and for Rabicano pixel ponies. And I know a dog named Quaver (that sort of trembly tone you get when you sing a note for a long time).

I just bred a ton of show ponies. Gonna start this for this batch!
  • Oh those are good too :)

Nice to see someone else starting it. It's pretty fun to do honestly
  • If you like bad 80's movies, you could name a horse Xanadu :P
  • I like naming after movies lol might have to use that one :)
  • @WindwarFarms or if you like movies based on comics that came out in the 80s (I think), you could name it Xandu! (Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel)

Quinn is also a nice name! Knew an ACD called Quinn and he was such a lovely boy.

For my naming system, I'll sometimes pick a theme. For music on a dark chestnut hh, I came up with Dubstepping, Symphony of Science, and Whip and Neigh Neigh. For this champagne HH we got special, I named it "Not Beersies", after an add here about being responsible and not drinking if you're driving (aka, having not beersies aka water). Sometimes I'll just do it with the name, or pick a theme off the top of my head.

  • Those are some good name ideas! I might have to steal some for work!
  • Some decent Q names:
    Quality
    Quantum
    Quartz
    Quebec
    Quest
    Quetzal
    Quicksilver
    Quidditch
    Quintessential

    Some more X names:
    Xenolith
    Xander
    Xavier
    Xena
    Xenon
    Xerses(name of several historical kings/rulers)
Xiang(river in China, also a Chinese name)

  • I often have a theme for a batch of horses I need to name. My to do list seems to come up a lot.... I had a ton of Harry Potter themed names at one point. Song/album titles if I'm listening to music. One day it was everything I could see around me that was red. Book titles are common. Once I was doing a bit of study so it was all anatomical terms. Grocery lists and recipe titles/ingredients are good. I have fun with it, especially with show ponies!
  • I think I may try this with my show ponies. Have to come up with some lists.
  • @WindwardFarm I will definitely be using some of those they are great!
  • My breeders get a name either based on their parents names or what I am seeing on TV, or song names, etc... Those I throw in the barn that were spayed/gelded right away get names based on an alphabet letter. So this year is "E". There will be some late culls that will have full names, but the rest of this years crop will start with E.
  • Thats a nice idea. I name after songs tv characters etc random but I ended up with the alphabet in my barn lol
  • I usually do favorite character from media but when I started out most of my horses got named after food.
Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.
Striving to become a quality Draft breeder.
  • When I have trouble thinking of names I just use Military Working Dogs names :) we had a UUdensi and a UUnion
