Culling based on papering
  • So I'm really trying to crack down on quality so my question is, for these three A papered 2nd Gens, should I only keep fillies that paper Blue? All have proven to produce Blues but I want to know if it's worth it to snip all fillies that paper Red from them? Would there be any reason to make exceptions to Red papered fillies? Like specific genes or AFPT, for instance? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Also, another papering question. By what generation do you expect *Gold and snip any Blues? Would 5th gen be reasonable to snip all Blue papered mares? Just want to clean up my lines.

  • I think it's some people get gold at 6, but that's rare and culled any other not gold at that gen level is only used if you really want a small amount of horses and have very good lines. I believe gold tends to appear around about 7th/8th gens.

  • Personally, I wouldn't keep Red papered fillies that are by an A papered stallion. There's no way they are an improvement on their sire and they are most likely worse than he is.
  • I require gold by 6th gen but have a several 5th gen and even 3 4th gen gold mares. For 3rd gen, I now require blue papers even from B/red 2nd gen, ordinary create foundation lines, but I only made that decision after I had enough blue mares to mostly fill my 3rd gen pastures. I used to keep red 3rd gens who had AFPT above 10.8.

  • I require Gold/Star by 5th gen, and consider myself lucky to get them by 4th gen. I do have a 4g star stallion and a couple 4g Gold mares. In order to stay intact, my foals need to paper better than BOTH parents. Colts must test superior to their sire or a stallion equivalent to their sire.
  • Ok ignore me, I was a couple of Gens off :p

  • So far I have been holding firm at Blue/A at gen 3 and Gold/Star at Gen 5. I have gotten Blue/A at Gen 2, and a gold and star at Gen 4. When I get enough of them, then I will lower to A/Blue at Gen 2 and Gold/Star at 4. I am hoping to start getting the rare Gold star at gen 3 - long way off.

I think it's important to balance having enough horses to breed with holding them to high standards. If culling for a paper level would mean you have 3 mares instead of 30, I would hold off until you have more mares at the paper you desire. Remember, if your gen 5s aren't Papering where you want them it, it's because your gen 3 and 4s aren't producing at the level you want them to...so get your early gens in order first.

I was just fully transitioning to only Blues at gen 3 when I dispersed my herd. Remember that while it's wonderful to have really high goals for your herd, most of us are still breeding with at least some regular create quality foundations. You need to decide if you're going to hold your entire herd to boosted standards or if you're going to allow wiggle room.

I would hold your gen 2 As to producing Blue fillies from the pasture. I always cut slack for straw or handbred foals provided they pass SBA.

It is generally accepted that with harsh and consistent culling it is possible to get *Stars/*Golds by gen 5, but again I would not cull your Blues until you are producing enough Golds to have a decent herd of Gen 5s. Culling your gen 2, 3, and 4 mares strictly for an AFPT cutoff will help you improve those herds and increase your chances of more Golds as your lower gen mare herds are improved. Remember, breeding those gen 5 Blues is still giving you nice show ponies, which are worth their weight in gold as they should have nice juicy high PTs.
