Need a little motivation and advice
-
I really really need to get my barns back in order. Several no the ago I was doing really good with heartless culling but life has been buay and I fell behind.
I'll be having my son sometime this month so im not sure if I'll be breeding (basically the 3rd month in a row) this season. But I do need to cull before life becomes completly hectic. I'm sure I'll go offgrid for a few months after birth and if like a cleaner slate to return.I ramble to much
Okay so right now it's my 3rd generation that I'm going through. Over and over and still haven't made a dent. Feel like I'm to easy on my stallions. Not sure about the girls.
I'm also not sure about my 2nd gen herd. Can't tell if the 3rd gen quality is low due to poor 2nd gen stock/breeding practises and general neglect or if it's normal quality and I'm just being lazy.

My 3rd gen herd. If you'd like to take the time to look through the 2nds just change the 3 to a 2 in the horse name bar
I appreciate any advice or "if it were my herd..." replies :x----

For a start I'd personally geld all the B papered gen3's boys unless they have something really special. I'd also spay the red papered mares but only once you have enough Blues to go on and breed with. But if nothing special, and red, then spay! That's the easiest way to pick up the gen3 quality! (And thus a better quality gen4!)

I agree with Kintara. Because I breed for certain colours (dp, appy, etc) I'll usually only have 1 stallion, maybe two with that colour and get rid of all the rest.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
I also agree with Kintara. You can easily cut your 42 stallions to a manageable amount right there.
You have gen 2 stallions that aren't even papered. I would Paper any of your stallions that aren't papered and also consider snipping anyone who is inconsistent. Once you've done that you could easily spend a fortune on Comparison testing....if you have the cash to do that I would look into buying or borrowing a gen 2 A stallion and compare your favorites of the gen 2s to them. If you're a bit short on cash I would just pick your favorites from each color you're breeding and snip the rest.
If you have the time, I would set a cut off AFPT for your mares at each generation. Any mare with 3 or more foals would have to have an AFPT at or above the cut off. Get rid of anyone below that, either by snipping and throwing in your show herd or putting them in the auction. -
I have a g2 A papered stallion you could borrow to compare your other guys if you wanted to go that route :) I haven't done my real breedings yet for this season so I don't need him right away :)

I'm going to echo everyone else - you have enough G3 As that you don't need to keep the Bs so I'd snip all of them to start.

(Been a very busy week!)
I'm going to start going through my 3rd gen boy meticulsly. The problem with this is that my A 3rds are usually not the color that I breed for and my Bs are the colors I prefer.
However I'm proud to say I have started working harder on my foundation lines and should soon have better quality color specific studs to replace my Bs.
For now I will cull my 3rds and then go through my 2nds. A lot of my 2nd boys go in papered simply because I forget about them, a clear sign that I have way to many.
@RedDeeFarms that is very sweet of you! Right now I don't have the extra cash to do comparison testing, even though I'm skipping breeding minus a select few horses. Once I do have the money I will let you know to see if I can still borrow him.
Time to get busy!----
