While test-breeding one of my snowflake appaloosas with a solid mare, she produced a surprise snowflake filly!

Silver Buckskin snowflake - passed SBA, tested red and 10.3 PT. The season is off to a good start!

I'm considering GMTing her to a stallion. A thought that has nothing to do with the current sale...

Wtg you two! It's always nice to discover this. I've wanted to test all of my breeding stock for snowflake, but haven't got no where near the amount of money needed xD

I got a surprise snowflake out of my Rhythm of Four mare :) it was a Colt so I ended up selling him :) Congrats! They are always a nice surprise

How do you test for snowflake? Premium upgrades only?

Snowflake is not a testable gene. So the only way to know if a horse has it is if they show it in their coat, or they throw a foal who shows it in their coat, or they have a parent who showed it in their coat.

There's no way to do a genetic test for snowflake as far as I'm aware. If you own a hom snowflake stallion, you can test your mares for snowflake by breeding them all to your stud. Since snowflake is recessive and only shows on hom snowflake horses that have appy, if any of the foals are born showing snowflake, you know their dams must be snowflake carriers. It would work best if the snowflake stallion is also hom appy so you don't have to worry about the foals being non appys who won't show snowflake.

Here's my surprise snowflake :D Didn't know he was one until I went to enter foals into their respective breeding clubs! Best part? He was the only colt from his sire that papered Superior :D

I think you can tell if you have a hom snowflake horse if the snowflake breeder's club will let you enter it. Otherwise, I have no idea how you could tell if that horse is snowflake by looking at him. He's absolutely stunning but he's so white that I can't see any appy patterns on him.

@WindwardFarm I had already entered him in the breeders club :) That's how I know he's homozygous snowflake :D Which is why he was a surprise!

Gorgeous. Snowflakes are pretty. I would get all confused on them.
