Up Coming Surgery
-
This place really does become an extended family. Some of you I am even friends with on Facebook. For those of you who do not know my oldest daughter is special needs. She's 14yr old but mentally is more around 6yr old. She will be going into her 3rd back surgery on June 5th at 7:30am to fuse her entire spine due to scoliosis. As you can guess I'm starting to stress over it as time draws closer. It's very hard to explain to her what's going to happen and why we have to do it. I ask that you keep us in your thoughts and prayers please. We could really use them. We have a Facebook page called "We Are The Panel" if you would like to follow along and see updates.

Thank you. Here is an update. She has back surgery on June 5th. This is her 3rd back surgery. We had to fuse her spin from L1 to T4 and put in permanent rods. She has scoliosis really bad and surgery was are only option. She was up and walking on Tuesday June 6th and came home on Wednesday June 7th. Right now it's pretty rough. She came home with an IV of Novocaine going into her back muscles. It was removed on June 8th late that night. Every since the pain medicine doesn't seem to be enough to keep her comfortable. She is not allowed to twist because she could pull stitches that are on the inside and if she manages to pull those stitches it would send us back to the hospital and reopening her back. We spend a lot of time on mommy's recliner with her heat pad and her electric throw blanket because the heat makes her feel better and help her doze. She basically can't do anything by herself. She has to be walked to the bathroom and she needs help because she can't bend over. It's really frustrating for her and stressful for me. I have 4 kids in total, the youngest is 2. The weekends are nice because my husband pitches in to help where he can. The main thing now is keeping her basically still and making sure we keep everything clean and don't end up with an infection like we did last time which was no fun at all.
-
Thanks for the update. It sounds like she's having a pretty rough time, but I pray that her recovery will go well and that she'll soon be free to move around more freely.
I have some idea of what you are going through. In 2013, my husband had perforated diverticuli in his large intestine. He had to have a colostomy and then another surgery to connect things back up again. After his hospital stay and some time in rehab, I was on 24 hour nursing duty until after he recovered from the second surgery. We don't have any young children, thank goodness.
I will keep not just your daughter but your whole family in my thoughts and prayers.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Thank you. It's been rough on the kids. It's my oldest daughter who has surgery, she's 14. The next in line is my second daughter who just turned 11 and then my son who just turned 9 and then the baby. When Danielle is in a lot of pain and starts crying it starts a chain reaction among the other kids because they don't like to see her like that. We end up in a big group hug with a bunch of snot nosed kids with mom in the middle lol

Update: Woke up this morning to her oozing through the bandage and in complete pain. We are off to the doctors to have cultures draw. She may be infected. We went through this with her first back surgery and it is not fun.
-
Praying for you. Never fun when our babies are hurting. I hope the doctors can make her feel better. If you need to talk you can pm me and I will listen. You can also find me on Facebook my name is Dorothy Mann. My profile picture is of my colt Orion running through the field.Thanked by 1fj1482

Just got back from the hospital. It's an infect. They had to reopen her. She will be in the hospital for at least 5 days. Right now they left her open with a huge vacuum sponge, they call it, to basically suck all the infection out. On Wednesday they will be closing her up again and will be putting in a port into her heart so we can administer antibiotics here at home and a nurse will be coming to the house again to help change the dressing and other stuff. It's like reliving a nightmare because this happened the first time she had back surgery. If you want to follow along with us we set up a Facebook page to give updates to friends and family https://www.facebook.com/wearetherealpanel/ Thank you all for your kinds words and encouragement. It really means a lot.

Im just seeing this thread and now the update. Im so sorry that an infection developed thats terrible! A few months ago was the first time I saw your wearetherealpanel page and read every post in one sitting lol and learned about Danielle and your awesome family dynamic (which I totally admire btw) Shes a tough cookie though and will totally get through this sucky bump in the road. So weird that just the other day I was thinking about her randomly and all this had been going on. Tell her we're all rooting for her and that we think shes awesome and very strong, stronger than me! Thinking about her, you, and the rest of the family and sending positive and healing thoughts and energy her way!Thanked by 1fj1482

@MoonAcre Stables thank you so much. Words like that mean so much to all of us. It helps us all stay strong during difficult times like these. I hope some of our posts made you laugh. We try not to be to serious because honestly it helps keep us sane lol

Update: Right now her back is completely open. She has what they call a sponge, which is basically and machine that sucks the infection out. She will be like that until Wednesday. Wednesday the plan is to put her back under close her up, possibly with two small drains and put in a Broviac so that we can administer antibiotics. The cultures so far just look like a simple everyday staff infection but one looks different and the doctors are a little worried it could be MRSA. We still have a few days to wait to be sure. With all this going on her spirits are high, for the most part. The hospital has dogs that come in to see the children so that is a major highlight for her.
-
I am holding you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I am hoping that this infection gets resolved quickly for the sake of your daughter, and family.Thanked by 1fj1482
-
Fingers crossed your culture and sensitivities come back with lots of Abs that can treat the infection. Boo to MRSA!Thanked by 1fj1482
-
This Mornings Update: All the cultures came back as a very common, easy to kill staph infection that we dealt with last time. Thankful for that. It means it will be easy to kill. Today we are having surgery at 11am EST to close her back up and put in a Broviac. We will also be scheduling the home care nurse and all the antibiotics she is going to need for anywhere between 3 to 6 weeks.
-
Yay for non-antibiotic resistant infections! Boo for infections..... but thrilled it's not MRSA!Thanked by 1fj1482
-
That's great news that there's no MRSA! I hope the rest of the recovery goes smoothly.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Oh Im so happy its not MRSA. Sucks that its an infection at all but at least its a common and easy to kill one! Still thinking about you guys a ton. Every day is one day closer to being able to go home and being able to be all healed up!Thanked by 1fj1482

Update: We came home today. Having a little trouble adjusting to not being the center of attention when she speaks. It's just mom who has three other kids to take care of and no more nurses who come running at a push of a button. The home nurse will be coming tomorrow to give me a refresher course on how to use the broviac but seeing how I have already given her her first course of antibiotics here at the house with no issues and we have another due at 2 am EST I think it's like a bike, you never really forget how to do it once you've learned. lol. I'll be off to bed early though and have things set up so that I wont have to wake her at 2am when I give it to her. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers it really has meant a lot. The entire family has been under a lot of stress and that alone can cause arguments that normally wouldn't break out. Thank you all again so much :)
