Age of possible snowflake carriers?
  • I know snowflake carriers is a relatively recent thing. I have a 7 year old first snow mare that has even more varnish than my 6 and 4 year old het snowflakes. Would it be worth it to try to breed her to a snowflake and see if she is a carrier?

  • Ok sorry, the snowflake carriers are 5 and three, but here is the five year old for comparison.

  • So far, from what I've observed, I don't think there's a correlation between varnishing and snowflake heterozygotes. So, I don't think a high degree of varnish means they're more or less likely to be snowflake carriers.

That being said, it also has no impact on whether or not your first snow is a carrier! So, it doesn't hurt to do a test cross. Besides, if you cross her with a homozygous snowflake, either you'll get a snowflake foal if she is a carrier or you'll get a heterozygous foal if she isn't.
