A brief rant about using the search
-
I would like to take a minute and rant:
I've seen a lot of people putting up requests for specific horses to buy, or for breeding. Something along the lines of: "I'm looking for a 2g A papered WhiteM stallion to breed to my mare. Post your prospects here."
Just so you know; I will almost NEVER respond to that kind of ad, and I just want to let you know why.
I have the commodity you want. I believe that it is YOUR job to contact me. The search page is there for a reason. While I really enjoy helping people out, I just don't have the time to do a search for everyone who wants to buy or breed. The only difference between me doing a search for the horse you want, and you doing the search yourself, is that I will put my owner ID in the appropriate box.
The search is your friend, and I think it is being severely under used. It can be complicated, and it took me, literally, YEARS to figure it out, but is is SO worth it. I use it daily, if not more. If you would like help figuring it out, I will gladly do what I can!
The only thing that selling one of my horses gets me is the 'prestige' of having my name out there as breeder/seller of quality horses. I don't make money from sales or breedings. Because of this I seldom sell intact, proven, breeding stock.
I have no problem selling straws or horses to other players, or putting a stallion up for you to breed to, but don't make me do all the work!
This has been a public service announcement, and is purely my opinion and no one has to pay the tiniest bit of attention to me..... unless they want to breed to, or buy some of my horses! :)>-
/rant -
I know when I use the search I have a hard time figuring out where things go. If I do a search with specifics I always end up not getting a single horse so I get frustrated with it. So I will admit I don't use the search horses except to look at my horses mostly.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

There have been times I have used search that way, contacting people with horses I want. Personally, they have never sold when I contacted them, but then when I post an add I've often been offered a horse that meets the criteria, either one that hadn't been created when I did the search, or was farther down the list, or one of my horses was one I bought when it changed owners shortly after I had contacted. Using the search to see if there is a horse like what we want already for sale is amazing, but otherwise I feel there is a break down.
Just my response. Maybe there is a way to come up with a solution.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
Search is King :)
and as Confluence points out , if you like a horse , message and ask. There are multiple reasons that a horse is not on the open market, but may still be for sale or for breeding.ID #21047Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
10/10 rant :))
The search is my far my best friend on here. I use it in one way or another every time I log in.
I can understand the ISO ads when you want to buy and you didn't see anything for sale that fit already. I have a lot of horses that I don't have up for sale, but if someone was looking for a trait they had, I'd sell to them.
Looking for breeding (live or straws) I'm more likely to respond to someone that found my horse and sent a PM asking instead of an ISO ad.
So yeah, the search is your biggest ally and can also be tons of fun when you're bored. Just keep playing and messing with it till you figure it out ;)Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
The only time i do a ISO is if there were no horses for sale that meet what I'm looking for. There are so many nice horses that i might be interested in that it is easier just to say ISO rather than trying to send several messages when using my phone it is hard to navigate. I use the search most of the time though, figured it out pretty quickly actually so i use it all the time.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

I always look for what I'm wanting to buy via the search...always.. like when I was looking to buy a diamond age...geesh, I even went so far as to check when some of the diamond age owners were online last lolz...I discovered via the search that there were players who owned more than one and I know how rare they are and that they're near impossible to get a hold of...
That is the only reason I made a search post...knowing very well my chances were slim..and also knowing that I dont want to go messaging a bunch of peeps and harrassing them about selling one of their RS horses...I figured those whose happened to see the post and were willing to sell, would get in touch ( and lucky me..one person did)..
A big thing for me too, I'll request in a post like that , that people message me privately about any details etc..I dont think its necessary for every other player to know the details of what horse/straw/egg etc Im buying or selling and for how much..
Kinda private that way
While we're ranting..lol..i think my biggest pet peeve is browsing the 'horses for sale' topic ..noticing things like..for sale, must sell...etc..So I go look at what they're selling..I like what I see..but the horse isnt even listed for sale..sighhh... Ill just igore it cuz Im not gonna go chasing peeps around about buying their horses...If you want to sell it, put it up for sale..If I like it..you betcha Im gonna grab it..otherwise..on to the next ad ..
Geez I talk too much..my bad!Champion Appaloosas -
ISO ads don't bother me a bit. Maybe it's the tone of the 'show me what you've got' posts that bugs me?
Wildland, I message people all the time asking about horses I like. You're right, I get a lot of no's (at least they are NICE no's!), but I frequently get a yes. It's worked well for me over the years.
ETA: Windspun- YES! It drives me nuts when people do that. OK, if it's a 50k horse and you are just testing the waters, ask, but don't give me time to think about it! Put a price on that Beastie and I might just snap it up on impulse! If I end up not liking the horse after all, then it's my problem, and you still have your money and stall space!
I also don't mind when new(er) players ask that you 'make an offer', pricing horses to sell is tough! But at some point you should start being able to determine what the horse is worth and start putting them up for those potential impulse buys! -
Hmm...may have to try the messaging peeps thing. I hate buggin peeps tho..lol.. but I suppose it may prove to be successful when hunting for that exact horse that I'd like to have lol..Champion Appaloosas

I don't mind the request/ISO ads, as they add activity to the forums, and are easy enough to skip over if I'm not interested in reading them. (I will also admit I am nowhere near the point where other players are actively seeking out my lines.)
I only have about a 50% response rate to my private message inquiries about horses for stud or sale, even when they have an ad running. If you don't want to sell to me, I will not take offense, but a simple "I am not interested" reply is much more polite than ignoring a message. I do agree that if your (non-restricted genes) horse is advertised for sale, it should actually be listed for sale. I understand why people get disheartened about just searching and requesting via PM.
Then again, I often seek genetic expressions that haven't been isolated on the game/search yet (PATN1, and I don't think PATN2 is even on the game yet, so my desired "snowcaps" are actually fewspots). In these cases the search engine isn't always useful to me.
However, I do strongly support exploring and understanding the search engine, because it is a very useful tool. Ads should supplement searching when possible, not just take the place of it.
When I started playing, I practiced searching with louder, more complex horses I own/like: can I narrow down search results enough to find them in a small result pool? If I can, I have developed a pretty good understanding of how to find horses with those particular physical traits I seek. If I can't, then I need to tinker further with the search engine parameters!
P.S. If anyone DOES know how to find PATN+ or 1 via search, please educate me! From what I can gather by reading old forum posts, it has not yet been coded into the search engine.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
The only time I would do an ISO is if I'm looking for a hidden gene, like dp or snowflake. I know you can search for dp, but some horses will be hom dp but have no sty, and yet I'd still love to get my hands on them! Those horses wouldn't show up in a search.
And I agree, if you advertise a horse for sale in forums it should be put up for sale. I will never put up a "make me an offer" post, but I will do posts advertising my horses already up so they'd (hopefully) sell quicker.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

On the topic of the search... is there a way to search for generations.... like all g3 mares?
-
No, and people have been asking Ammit to make generations searchable for ages, but then you have to take into account mixed gens and not all of them are the same 'amount' of mixed, and it just gets nuts.
There was a conversation a couple of days ago about how people sort their horses, and lots of people put the generation number somewhere in the horses name, and some (like me) prefer to use tattoos. -
There are a couple of ways to try to search for a particular generation. One of the best I found was to search for a particular number or Roman numeral in the name search and also sort by paper level. I know what Paper level I expect for a generation, so I would scroll to that paper and then look from there. Also remember to check Lined and uncheck Foundation. Obviously that only works for horses that are papered though...which eliminates anything not owned or bred by Premium members...

Basic members can paper too, FYI.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

I remember people asking Ammit about making Breeders Clubs for more than foundation and 2nd gen horses instead of lumping all the others under the single term "lined". Her response was that it wasn't possible to program a search to identify generations beyond 2nd gen, because of the complexity it would require, or something to that effect. This was several years ago, when the Breeders Clubs were first introduced, and my memory may be a bit off on the details, but I definitely remember her saying that it wasn't feasible to try programming a search for anything beyond 2nd gen.De gustibus non disputandum. If there are issues understanding the search, no one has informed me about them. It would be helpful to me if people could outline those. It makes sense to me, so I am unable to guess what things you have difficulties with.

I think the search is pretty easy to use. And I use it all the time. I definitely agree that a lot of people dont use it and I dont understand why! Its such a useful tool.
You can kind of search for generation. A ton of us use numbers to mark our generations. So.. put the number youre looking for in the name box and voila some horses. Now of course you will get horses that arent of that generation or horses who just have their IDs as their names and you also wont see ALL the horses of that generation for sale since a lot of people dont put generation numbers in their horses names but Ive found loads of horses doing it that way.
