What Should I Breed Her To?
  • I've seen some discussion on equal breeding and breeding horses with same papers for quality. I have a mare, blue in the 6th generation that I would like to breed soon this season or early next season. Am I best to breed her to star 6g studs or A? One of her passed foals was intact with a star and papered star if that matters.

  • Personally, I'd go A, purely as she would be inferior in quality when compared to a Star* papered stallions' breeding ability.

Although, in saying that, there is a swing in foal breeding abilities, therefore no guarantee on an intact foal either way! But, as the new testing compares a foal against both parents you're best to match breeding abilities/papering :D

  • Depends on what you're breeding for. Breeding even ability is mostly about getting more intact foals, and breeding even generations is more about liking the aesthetic evenness of their family tree (and about breeding even ability, usually but not in this case).
  • I'm wanting intact foals and no matter what I'll be breeding even. Thanks :)

  • Its a tough call but I've bred plenty of blue mares to my *Star boys and had success with quality intact foals. If she's a high blue and you let her build up 30 days in the pasture she should produce a nice foal.

This is a foal that I bred out of my 6G *Star stud and one of my blue papered 6G mares in the pasture.

And a very similar cross out of the same stallion created one of my favorite 7G mares.

  • I think I may stick with star. I think she is a pretty high blue.

Im worried he may be better quality than her and since he's not cheap so I'd like to have the best chance at getting something intact.

  • Your best chance of an intact foal would be to try and compare her AFPT to the AFPT of the studs you're considering and see which is closest to hers. That'll tell you if she's a high Blue that's closer to the Stars or if she's closer to the A.
  • I have an A het Satin 6G stud if you are interested and decide to go for an A papered stud

  • If you do breed to higher quality stallions, you will almost be garenteed that anything that passes testing is high quality.

  • I'd breed to a Star, only because I'd want the best chance at a higher quality foal. I wouldn't go a really high star though because you'd never get an intact foal
  • I'd breed to a star too, as the ones that do stay intact will be that much better. And already it looks like she is on the top edge of Blue
