Naming/Organization Theories
-
I've kinda noticed how everyone seems to have a way of organizing their horses through names, and as my herd grows bigger I was wondering if I could have some insight. For me I just used to do the 1G, 2G thing, but I'm quickly realizing I need more.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
-
For me, I format my names: AHH #G NAME SPECIALGENES; Example: AHH 2G Snow Storm SNF, AHH 1G VintageVisanity KP, or AHH 3G Black Sequel LF
To break it down:
AHH - A Hayes Horses
1G - foundation
2G - second generation
3G and so on - third generation and so on
then I put abbreviations at the end of their names to signify what specific genes they have that I breed for or like to look for:
STY - Sooty+
SNF - Homozygous Snowflake
snf - Heterozygous Snowflake
FRM - Frame
PRL - Pearl
LVR - Liver
CHO - Chocolate Palomino
KP - Kit Promoter
ICE 13/4/7 - Ice 13, 4, or 7
W3 - White 3
SAT or sa or sasa- Homozygous Satin
Sa or Sasa - Heterozygous Satin
I do it this way so I know generation and so I know what line they are a part of. That way I know to breed my satins with other satins and so on. It's just based on how you want to "code" things. It took me a while before I decided on how I was going to do things but once I figured it out, it worked really well. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask questions! -
Most people do a variation of what AHayes does. For mine I use BH(insert generation here) Horse name and then a suffix depending on if they carry a special gene. It helps when you have a lot of horses and you're trying to look through names quick. Cheers had the most advanced naming system I've seen so far as far as color abbreviations go.
I use these suffixes
GP - Hom Gulastra Plume
HGP - Het Gulastra Plume
KP - Hom KP
HKP - Het KP
SNF - Hom Snowflake
HSF - Het Snowflake -
Ok, I really like that a lot!
So maybe for my tobiano/rabicano strain I could come up with TR, or something like that.
With my appys I just put App in the name, and have a double meaning with it also meaning app on the phone. Do you ever put in the mare's names specifically which stallion you intend to breed them with? Like I used to do "Kyle" for a stud I have. Or "Brix" gal.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
What's Gulastra Plume?Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
-
Does anyone ever do something in the horses name to mean "re-evaluate at another date" Like a mare that had an iffy first foal or something like that?Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
-
Gulastra Plume is actually kinda cool! Where is it on the rarity scale? Maybe I can keep more of an eye out for it.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
-
I personally just keep a mental note or will put TEST or BOOST at the beginning of a name if need be. Although since mares can be papered at birth now I don't need to retest anybody now so I haven't needed to put TEST as a reminder :)
It's in the GMT Lab for 5 tokens per copy so it's not restricted. Although most breeders prefer to sell only to those who have the gene already. But I'm sure if you do a search you can find some breeders and maybe talk to them about buying some stock. -
You won't generally see GP out in the public market. GP breeders tend to keep those horses strictly in house and most of them require you to already have GP in your barn before they will sell to you.
If I'm breeding horses in the lab I will make their name BH# Sire Name x Mare Name. Like this guy
BH3 Court x Treat HKP
As for re evaluating horses I will generally only name something once I've decided to keep it. So I have a few horses running around with their lab name because I haven't decided what to do with them. With mares that I want to keep an eye on I have a pen and a pad of paper next to my laptop that I write notes on. Otherwise I make a note in their comments section on their page. -
Oh that's a good idea. A specific pen for that. And then you can try them with different studs and see if they get better.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

I use tattoos for sorting instead of codes in the names. I have a thing about extra stuff in names. Of course, I have a thing about too many tattoos on a horse as well! I put all my tattoos in the corners, not on the horses. It's all just personal preference.
Several people have asked for a sortable list or box, or something that would replace the 'codes', and Ammit has tried to figure something out, but has never hit on the right process. -
Tattoos make sense. Although they don't really help with getting mares back into the correct barns on just the normal barn page.
Yea, too compicated of a name just makes it too clunky. For a while I tried "Bucking" in the name of a Buckskin or "App" (like phone app) for appaloosas, but that didn't work because being a buckskin wasn't that important to me.
What are the expenses surrounding tattoos?Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
This was my naming convention organizational method. I liked it because I could see, with a glance only at a name in a drop down menu or in a barn, what color, generation and special genes a horse was/had. I also used tattoos extensively because that made sorting horses with special genes super easy (plus they are really pretty when you get to commission someone talented to do them!).
I used a collection of letters and a number as a suffix at the end of the horse's name for my organization.
The letters each meant something, and here is a list.
E black
e red
A bay
w wild bay
t brown
c Cream
p Pearl
D dun
C champagne
Z silver
r roan
T tobiano
W white spotted
Sb Sabino
n W20
L Appaloosa
S splash
R rabicano
O frame
Y sooty+
q satin
i any Ice
X Nexus
Q Axiom
J GP
K KP
F Snowflake
DP DP
d draft
( I never did settle on a letter for Light boned horses..but I sort of mixed them into my general breeding stock while I actually had plans for a specific draft line)Thanked by 1AztecArabians -
I put all my generation numbers first, then if it's a certain line, name and any special genes last.
Some examples:
4 Up In The Stars sa - 4th gen satin
2Ax Up To The Crown Sb1 - 2nd gen Axiom with Sabino 1
2i9Ax Fimbulwinter w2sb1 - 2nd gen Ice 9 Axiom with White 2 and Sabino 1
2 Up In The Air DP - 2nd gen DP carrier
I like to use prefixes for the important things like generation and line. I do a lot on mobile and it makes all horses in the same gen and line be sorted together alphabetically. Then special genes are an after thought and after the name. -
I use CP as my prefix (stands for Chilton Park which is the name of my stud farm). Then generation, name, height, bone density, and finally special genes (if they have any). Examples:
CP2 PokeBomb 143 197 KP 2nd generation, 14.3hh, 1.97 bone density, homozygous kit promoter
CP6 Astronomer 132 193hKP 6th generation, 13.2hh, 1.93 bone, heterozygous kit promoter
CP1 So Special 133 217 SF Foundation, 13.3hh, 2.17 bone, homozygous snowflake -
Right now I only code the generation, because each of my lines have a specific naming theme (Tolkien names/words, Greek mythology names, colour names, etc.). But I might have to rethink this on some of the lines that are bigger because you run out of names in a theme!
-
I don't organise mine in a very special way but I use Roman numerals for the generations and always put it as the first part of their name.
I - G1
II - G2
III - G3
IV - G4
V - G5
VI - G6
etc
Geldings and SM's are all given random names since their genes aren't a concern to me. Sometimes if they're unexpected such as DP or SF I'll link their names to it to try again at a later date. Most of them are links to Money in a way though or a comment on how pretty I find them. There's a lot of Cuties, and Gorg's used in the names.
Stallions are uniquely named but have some sort of link to their sires if they have one. For example, my DP line which is linked to Coffee King is mostly noble names, so for example I have Kings Speaking out of him.
Mares have a spin off their dams and sires names, usually a combination of the two. So again, using Coffee King, I have 'Spooky Coffee', 'Behead the King', etc. Usually at a glance I can tell who they're from judging by the running theme.
New foundation line I'm starting is linked to Pirates so soon enough there's going to be a lot of 'Arggghs' hanging around in the names xD#4519 -
I generally use one letter for each of the white genes except Splash that I do Sp. . If the horse is homoz for the gene I use a capital. If they are hete. its lower case except Frame cuz I want that to stand out I use a capital F. The gen number is at the end. Skylights DreamGirl SpaF2. This mare is Splash, het appy, andframe.
Skylights Roja Blanca TA2 = Gen 2 Homoz tobiano and Homoz Appy.. Roja Blanca is Spanish for Red White which she is a chestnut with a lot of white. I like coming up with unusual names. :)
Base color doesnt matter a whole lot to me but some horses have part of their base color in their name like Champagne taste and Buck Gold.
-
I just use tattoos to note generations. If I was worried about noting a second line, I'd use tattoos for that too.
Tattoos are so easy to search by, and then I don't use up space in the name. -
I also use tattoos instead of using letters in the name for most of my sorting.
All of my warmbloods have the prefix SS, Drafts have SR and riding horses have SD.
My confirmed KP horses have Kipp in their name. Confirmed snowflake horses have Lupine in their name. Other than that I don't use their names for anything else.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

I have stopped using tattoos, as I dont have the time to put them on :P
I use gens as a suffix, and these prefixes:
M - for all foals bred by me
M1 - for my brown/wild bay line
M2 - for my DP line
M3 - for my satin line
M4 - for my snowflakes
KP - for my Kit Promoters
GP - for my Gulastra Plumes -
I'm rather boring with my naming system.... generation number at the front, and if they have frame (a lot of mine do) there is a f behind the name. Foundations dont have a gen number and if the horse is uneven, UE is put behind the name. I also try to carry on the names of the parents.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
I don't sort much, but generally Ct as my personal tag, Cts for ponies/other breed-for-show or on-the-side stock, Ctn for altered stock (I'm inconsistent there since I initially had Cts for show and pony lines and introduced Ctn when I increased my pony stock, but it doesn't really matter). Then add numbers for generations, though I don't bother for 1st gens. So for main line (almost entirely drafts) it's Ct, Ct2, Ct3 etc. For sidelines, Cts, Cts2, Cts3. I don't bother labelling altered stock with generation, since that's only really relevant to breeding. I have been known to use Ct0 for uneven, but I only have one or two of those at most since I breed evenly. And I add an X to the end of a horse's name as a reminder to auction, if I'm sorting while the auction is in progress. Don't have enough to need more than that at present, certainly not systematically, though I have a frame carrier called "Frame of Mind" and some of my livers have names like "Luck of the Draw". A lot of the names are vaguely inspired by appearance.
-
I only put my stable initials and the gen. I'm not breeding for any particular color I'm enjoying just taking my best quality stock and breeding them and saying "surprise me" colorwise.
-
Not as fancy as most people's, but my system for naming is:
RR - my prefix for all horses I own
Place Names - used for intact first gen/foundation horses
Weld West/Historic Figure Names - used for intact second gen horses
For horses that aren't intact I either give them a random "show horse" sounding name if they are a foundation or leave their name intact if I bought them. For non-foundation horses I find some way to incorporate something from one or both parent's names, even if only tangentially.
I use tattoos for proper generation management. I only place my RRR tattoo on horses I have bred/created myself.Red Rock Ranch

I don't have a fancy code for listing colors or anything in names. I do however, have a certain way I name. Each foundation stallion has a name indicating generation and anything special like perfect foundation (pf) or top notch producer (tnp) and then a single word name. Example: G1 TNP Rainier. Foundation mares are named similarly, but for mares I'm not using the same first letter twice. I then name colts G# (special notes) (sire's name/line) (dam's name). Example: G2 TNP Rainier Silva (tnp if both parents are tnp). Fillies are named with a single word name that starts with the same letter as their dam. Example: G1 Silva's daughters could be G2 Stacia, G2 Sonnet, etc.#28036

I'm really grateful to the people who put gens in their horses name. it makes finding a stud or buying a new horse a pleasant shopping experience.
-
I like the idea of naming all of a mares foals with the same first letter a lot! How would you continue that with G3?Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
-
Yes, I don't know how I could find a stud for my 5G mare if people didn't put it in the names. Then a few weeks later I find one I prefer more that didn't have that in the name and I am bummedBreeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
-
I use a number with a small g beside it for generation. my foundation are started off with a small f in front of their name. I try to use both sire and dam for the foal. I have two tattoos that I use on those foals. I think I need to rethink the special genes in their names.
-
JL - JOLO Ladies
JS - JOLO Studs
Z - show stock
Mares and studs get a generational letter added so that each generation can be sorted together and I just match the letter to continue to breed even.
JL - foundation
JLa - 2nd gen
JLb - 3rd gen
JLc - 4th gen etc.
