Ice Question
-
From what I have seen from studying family lines, only one parent needs to have the gene to pass it on? Is this correct?

that Is my Black Ice Sabino Tobiano mare. I have had her about five months going on 6, and she has only produced me one Intact ice foal.

That is her Intact daughter Rumble Dust ( White Black Ice Tobiano). and the only ice baby that has been intact. the info below is from the HJ genetics guide
Ice is a pure fantastic gene that mimics ice or snow depending on the version. A version of Ice is sold each year for the winter Holidays and some versions of ice have been purchased for private ownership by members.
These are all the ice Variations
Ice 1 (Winter 2013/2014)
Ice 2 (Winter 2013/2014)
Ice 2 Aurora
Ice 3 (private)
Ice 4 (private)
Ice 5 (Winter 2014/2015)
Ice 6 (private)
Ice 7 (private)

http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=155307 example of Ice 2 Aurora got by combinging Ice 1 and ice 2.
Ice 3, 4, 6, and 7 are private
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=133707 That is a horse who only has the first gene of ice but yet still registers as ice even though neither of her parents are ice.

if you look at QH3 Nada's gene testing you will see Ii ( meaning only one copy of ice)
but if you look at my mare Rumble Dust

you will see her ice gene is different IiII (one copy of ice on the first allele and the Second Ice allele. but in some horses switching the lowercase I to the second Allele.)

Oh I didn't think to check the gene wiki thing, thanks.
'and some versions of ice have been purchased for private ownership by members'
Meaning nobody else could use it?
You were breeding your Ice mare with non Ice stallions, and got 1 in 6 breedings, is that correct? So the chances are (from your experience only) 1 in 6?
Thanks you for replying. I'm about to pass out as I'm exhausted so may not see a reply for a while. -
The chances of getting an ice foal from a heterozygous ice parent are the same 50% as for any heterozygous gene, it was just luck that Baya's mare only threw only 1 ice foal out of 6. I have an ice stallion on HJ1 who has 45 ice foals out of 102.
The privately owned genes are ones that someone paid Ammit a bunch of real money to have the only foundation horse. I'm not sure how much she charges for them, but I suspect it is several hundred dollars. People who have invested that much money for a private gene are going to keep it private.I was jllewis on the old forum.

Hmmm now I'm curious and want to see these super rare genes!!
Thank you for telling me how many foals of yours came out with Ice. I don't have any horses with the gene, but I would like to. Almost all of my horses are Foundation or second gen though, and all the ices I have seen so far have long lines.
