Goal oriented?
-
How did you all finally decide on some goals? I am finding it hard to figure out my goals. I don't even know what I like. I feel so over the place with my breeding and hard to tell what is quality. I know I like Nexus and satin. I love Dancers line and Joeys Dream lines. I like my KP horses to.
Has anyone just felt like they can't settle on a color? If so what is your goal then? -
I just made myself a super fancy stud with all the colors I could possibly like and then used a bunch of high quality mares. Then I only focused on quality, with zero reguard to color. I find myself pleasantly surprised by the ressesive color combo's that pop up in my herd, even without me trying.
-
I liked everything except Gray and White 1. That's how I ended up with more than 3000 mares....
-
I used to breed for black, grullo and palomino. After a while it was difficult to keep all 3 lines so I went through my horses and really looked to see which line really made me squeal and which were just there. I still love all 3 but I like how the white stands out on the grey coats a touch more than black.
-
I go through phases. When I played on the western game it was all palomino roans. Now it's the livers. But I also have some KPs to play with, and I just decided to clear out most of my GP horses. I have one or two W10s and I just got a Spl3 mare to work with.
Usually I have the one main line that I focus on (the livers) and the others come and go as I get bored, or see a new one that I just love. -
Ive alway focused on Appys, on any sim Ive played..love my appies..
Im really loving the w2frames aswell...just starting to work with them..
My goal is to one day have a snowflake. Im trying to figure out how to GMT my own snowflake..sighh..Just one...jusssst want 1 snowflake lol.. Ive already spent a fortune trying to GMT horses...havent figured it out yet lolzChampion Appaloosas -
its hard to just stick with one type of coat lol I have so many projects going on because I have so many different types of coats so its hard to just stick to one. right now I'm really into the chocolate palomino pearls with kitm or without. livers are great to and KP :)
-
I am working on trying to get my horses more high quality, which is kinda taking a long time but I made requirements that each generation had to meet for me to keep the horse. But I am in love with Appaloosas, especially the blankets and leopards, and I also love Sabino! But getting rid of some horses is so hard! :)Where quality Show and Performance Horses are bred.

Know the feeling @bestfriend
I'm working on Liver and chocolate :)
Might drop the Liver and focus on breeding Appys or a Kit pattern (still to decide which one)
Would love to start a nexus, ice or kp line.
Just so many to choose from :P●▬▬▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

You dont HAVE to have a certain amount of things youre striving for when it comes to colors or color / pattern combinations.
I have KP, GP, Kitm, Satin, Pearl, Nexus, Axiom, Snowflake, Ice1, Ice5, Ice8, Ice10, Ice13, Sooty+, Splash, Splash2, All different white patterns, all different colors (Im probably missing something) some horses have a few of those genes at once some dont.
Would it be better(easier) if I had a narrowed down focus? Yeah probably :)) But I love lots of things so I decide to not limit myself lol -
Also I focus on some things more than others. And then sometimes I switch it up.
-
Like Moon, I had a bit of everything. I also started lines going one direction, got a really cool foal with an unexpected base color or pattern and completely changed the direction I was going with that line to follow what that foal had shown me (double cream with Nexus, leopard Appaloosa with Ice 10, silver black with Ice 9).
The one overriding thing I always bred for was quality. And I have to say, because I never had specific color goals for my lines, I never had any problem snipping foals. If they were pretty but didn't pass testing or meet my standards I had no problem making them show ponies. And since my show herd was so extensive, that was the last time I looked at most of them, even the really flashy ones.
If/when I come back I intend to limit myself much more as far as number of lines I work with....but quality will still be my top priority.Thanked by 1AztecArabians -
Quality is my main goal. I guess I need to figure out where I want them to PT at each generation. I have 9.9 at foundation.
10.2 for 2g. 10.5 for 3g. 10.8 for 4g. 11.1 for 5g. 11.4 for 6g. 11.7 for 7g. 12 for 8g.
Are those good goals for each gen. Then snip anything that didn't make my PT score.
-
This was my culling strategy at the beginning of the year. Obviously since mares can be tested at birth, and mare Papering is no longer influenced by stallion quality, some of the papering for mares would change a little.
Cheers February 6
Yeah, no problem! And you're welcome to share these with anyone!
As a note, I have had the Premium upgrade to work with, which has helped me progress both by being able to do all testing and because I've had access to things like embryo transfer. I also have been able to invest heavily (real cash) into pastures when Ammit has had sales, so all of my non-breeding-lab breeding is done in pasture with mares that have the full pasture bonus. And finally, I've had a massive show herd to fund testing, breeding, buying, GMTing, etc. I'm well aware most players don't have those luxuries but I would highly recommend to every single player to make building a show herd their top priority, even if it means sacrificing a few months of breeding. Buy established show ponies with a decent points balance, save your show bonus until you can buy more barns to house more show ponies. If you can build up a decent bonus, you will be able to fund your breeding and testing from that.
Cheers Cull and Keep Strategy:
Colts and stallions are culled at initial testing based on the standards set out below. If a new benchmark is found for a generation, all stallions in that generation are retested and culled if they don't measure up. In a rare case I may be too in love with a stallion to cull it...it will usually go up for public breeding even though it is inferior. It will be plainly marked as inferior. I used to keep inferior stallions for specific lines (Nexus was my biggest offender) thinking I would snip them once I got one up to my standards. Obviously that is a trap because you are using an inferior stallion to breed your next generation of broodmares. Better to skip breeding a group of horses or breed them to a top stallion who doesn't quite fit the profile than breed them to an inferior stallion who is "shiny"...
Mares must pass consistency and SMA at birth/purchase. Since you can't really evaluate the breeding quality of a mare until she has foals, mares are set out to pasture to breed for several seasons. With most snipped foals, I make notes on a mare's page about why they were snipped. Mares with lots of snipped foals who still meet AFPT and Papering requirements may be culled at my discretion. In particular a mare who has had many snipped and auctioned foals such that she never comes up for Papering is likely to be culled. Once a mare has been papered she must maintain an AFPT above cut off to remain in my pasture. Mares culled for AFPT are often sent to auction intact...mares culled for lots of snipped foals or low Papering are snipped and then may be auctioned or sent to the show herd...
I keep every foal that PTs at 10.0 and up. If they fail testing, they go to the show herd. Foals with PTs below 10.0 may be rarely kept in gen 2, but all foals with a PT below 10.0 is marked on the mare's page.
Mares used for breeding via egg collection or with straws are NOT held to the same AFPT standards as those in pastures. I try to remember to make notes that a mare has been straw bred so she is given a break on AFPT (but not Papering) if needed. She will also be forgiven a straw foal that fails basic testing since the vast majority of lab bred foals will not pass testing.
Ok, now that I've waffled on, here are the standards!
Foundation:
Stallions must be Perfect Foundation equivalent or better and paper at least C.
Mares may be regular creates through ExPerf/ExPro. Mares must Paper Red and have an AFPT of 10.0. I have culled tons of perfect foundation equivalents for low AFPT score.
Gen 2:
Filly foals must pass all testing, especially SMA and consistency. With very few exceptions fillies must PT at 10.0 or more. (Exceptions made for lab foals, really special colors).
Colts must pass basic testing (GA,consistency) and Paper B from perfect foundation stallions, A from boosted stallions. (I had decided not to necessarily hold the offspring of boosted mares to the A standard, although obviously an A from a perfect stallion and a boosted mare will automatically supersede any existing B offspring of that stallion). Colts are NOT culled on PT. Colts are compared to a benchmark (who was a B stallion known to be AGA a boosted gen 2 A stallion) AND a gen 2 boosted A stallion (I instituted this method before ExPerf/ExPro were introduced to the game. I would now simply test them against a gen 2 A which is a very low A).
Gen 2 mares must Paper Red, but I expect some of my best mares, especially bred to boosted line stallions, to Paper Blue. They must have an AFPT of 10.5 or more.
Gen 3:
Filly foals must PT 10.5 or up.
Colts must Paper A and compare superior to a boosted gen 2 A. My benchmark was a mid range A son of a boosted sire...this just takes lots of Comparing to find a stallion that is superior to most of his generation...
Mares must Paper Blue and have an AFPT of 11.0 and up.
Gen 4:
Filly foals must PT 11.0 and up.
Colts must Paper A and my benchmark was an A Papered stallion who was AGA a gen 5 non-boosted line *Star. I had managed to breed 3 *Star gen 4 stallions before I quit. You should probably strive for *Star gen 4s from boosted lines, *Star gen 5s from regular lines.
Mares must Paper Blue and have an AFPT of 11.4.
Gen 5:
Filly foals PT at or over 11.4.
Colts paper *Star.
My goal was for mares to paper *Gold at gen 5. AFPT 11.8 or so.
Gen 6: I was just starting to think about my gen 6 fillies. My guess is the goal would have been:
Colts paper *Star, compare superior to gen 5 *Star.
Mares paper Gold. AFPT would have started at 12.0 and crept up as my stock improved.

That is an awful idea Best Friend! Yeah, the PT score goals are a good idea but you should never alter horses based on their PT scores. You will end up snipping some very nice breeders that way. PT score and Breeding ability are calculated separately. And one is not a reflection of the other. A horse can easily get the highest PT score possible for it's parents to throw, and the lowest possible breeding score. The reverse is the same, it can get the lowest PT score possible and the highest breeding score.
You can use Average Foal PT to get a rough idea of the breeding ability of the parents, but there are a lot of other factors involved so it's just a rough estimate. Just stick to the in game tests to determine breeding ability and you will be fine.
Thanked by 1kintara -
Yeah after those little "beautiful mind" moments I had with Scope on an 8 Gen investment and analyzing AFPT correlation to Papering scores, I feel like I'm getting much more oriented and have begun setting up goals and steps to reach those goals.
First goal is to save up for an account upgrade because I don't feel comfortable using AFPT to measure my horses breeding ability anymore.
Eh... Maybe not beautiful mind moments. Maybe more like Rain Man moments.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.
Striving to become a quality Draft breeder. -
Yea, I kindve been going in 10 different directions. I have a really cool 2G stallion, that I'm trying to replicate in appearance. But I don't breed to him much anymore as he is papered horribly low.
Then I had a 17.1 hh riding horse mare, and I thought it was cool so I found a public stud to breed her to. But then he was gelded. So next thing I knew I was buying a whole herd.
Then I'm obsessed with Brindles, and I like how most are RS anyway. So I bought a bunch. Then I got a 2G.
Then I got my hands on a gold papered uneven mare. She's plain colored herself, but her foals are gorgeous. So I'm having fun breeding her and her foals.
I also like the Drafts a lot, and my friend is trying to get as heavy bone as possible, so I'm having fun sharing horses back and forth with her.
For me, I won't even test a horse unless it is uniquely colored. But once it's tested, I want 10PT bare minimum. C/yellow aren't even considered to keep unless spayed/gelded and good PT.
So now what I'm trying to do is get 30-60 stall barns that have 1-2 stallions each, and just try to get pretty colors. My goal is to have a horse where you can say "don't think I've quite seen one like that"
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
always remember HunterUnderSaddleGirl quality always should come over pretty colors. I learned that lesson the hard way all my pretty coats got altered because they were not good quality. most everybody breeds for quality and have great results doing it that way. and the more altered horses you get the more points go to your daily show bonus. I have a ton of altered horses just for show and they rack in the points.you just have to figure out witch pair would go good together breeding same level papers together c/yellow B/red A/blue and gold/star breed evenly 1 generation to 1 generation 2 generation to 2 generation ect. and check the horses Average foal performance test of both parents and if they have around the same AFPT then breed those two together but if they have not been bred yet try to match their performance test scores. you can breed pretty coats and get good results again if you breed evenly and match papers and use strict breeding advice always if you ever upgrade to the premium account. its a very useful tool. anyways I'm sending out this message for a lot of newer players to just something to keep in mind ;)
-
However, everyone can have their own goals. They may not line up with the goals of other players and making buying/selling/breeding with other players more difficult, but if all you want is a pretty horse, then go for it! :)Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

@Starfire
Yep, I completely agree. Foals must have 10.3 PT at 2G. But I don't like solids. So I have like an 80% cull percentage. Lol. But yes thank you.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
That's a good goal Hunter and yes I agree I was just giving advice and what works for me and what I was told by top players
