Superior to Sire
-
So, when you are breeding and get colts that are superior to their sires do you continue to breed them? If so, why? What are you looking to get? If you have multiple colts superior to Sire how do you chose who to let go?
Do you let go of all "as good as" colts and try again? -
I always breed for superior colts because it means the line is improving. If any of my colts test "about as good as" or "worse than" their sire, they get the snip. If I have a bundle of superior colts from one sire, I will pick which one has the genes I desire most and will test him against the colt I saved from the previous season (if I have one. If not I just keep the new colt). If he tests "superior", I keep the new colt and snip the other. If they test "about as good as" I keep them both and see who does better breeding. All the other colts from the season (from that sire) either get sold or snipped. It's all about quality. Typically, if I have enough hbs, i'll test my favorite superior colt against all his brothers to make sure there's not one that's better quality that I should keep. However, that gets expensive at 8000 hbs per test. Does this help?

That does help! I'm trying to start breeding quality vs pretty. I've already let go any horse that is inconsistent and just did the comparison test on my current intact colts. I did have a few superior (that is when it says "sire name is worse than colt name", right? It doesn't actually say "superior"?) And a few "as good as". I will go ahead and send those to auction.
How long dobyou continue to breed the sire until you "retire" him from breeding?
Also, I know pt/inconsistency is not related to breeding. From what I gathered being inconsistent can affect AFPT so that's why I've snipped/auctioned them all. Sucks too because I did have some pretty ones :( oh well! -
I haven't retired any of my foundie boys that I use regularly, yet. I like to have a couple of each age, so I can keep their lines going longer. If I get more than one superior to sire colt, I test them against each other and the superior one of the bunch is kept, any that are as good as him can stay for variation in blood and any that are worse than him get snipped and auctioned. Anything inconsistent also gets snipped.

I will retire my stud stallions once they turn around their 20's, to give them a break.

When I test my colts, I put their name in the first box and then the sires name in the second box so I can see the word "superior" and copy and paste the result in the colts page notes. And I don't retire my studs. I either breed until they turn 20 or age out. Or for my lined studs, if I get a better colt from the same sire and snip them or if I sell them. I tend to have a lot of 2G studs from multiple sires which makes my life soooo much fun come breeding season XD But I try to have a breeding goal for each stud. For instance, I have a colt that I'll only breed to chocolate palomino mares to work on my Chocolate Palomino Pearl line.

Oh! So, I guess I don't have "superior" colts. It just said the sire is "worse" than the colt. But the actual word "superior" wasn't used.
I guess I need to figure out what I want to breed for. I feel a little lost with that right now lol quality obviously but I like the idea of having a goal for each stud. -
If the sire is worse, then the son is superior. It depends on which name is used first. All is good and you have a superior colt!

Oh yay! :) I'll start putting the colt first moving forward. Thank you guys
