Thank you and ok so all chocolate and liver horses are DP? Because I have a chocolate pearl mare one parent is dark chocolate and the other is a pearl freaky Friday

She's probably hom DP. She's a gorgeous filly, I love what the pearl does to the chocolate palomino.

The only horses that have DP and really show it are livers and chocolates. All horses can carry DP but it can be really hard to tell who is carrying it in other colors. DP needs both copies of Ssty to express itself. For example,

Black Livers (Hom DP)
DPDP Ssty Ssty

Liver (Het DP)
DPDP Ssty Ssty

Chocolate Palomino (Het/Hom DP)
Cr DP(DP) Ssty Ssty

Both of these colts are het DP. This one

BH2 Jabberwok HKP Is black with both copies of Ssty. If I were to take the black off of him he would be a liver. But with the black on it's incredibly hard to tell if he has DP without knowing his lineage. What's darker than black? Nothing.


764919 This guy is het DP out of the same sire but you wouldn't know it just by looking at him since he's missing a Ssty gene.

Both my mares have 2 copies of StySty and Aa or aA

That's the tricky thing about DP. You need at least three genes to be present but you will only ever be able to see the two Sooty genes.
