I need to vent...
  • I am so frustrated right now. I dont know what to do. I sold my mare like 6 weeks ago now the guy wants to sell her back to me for 3 times as much as he paid for her. I am crying because I was going to try to bring my heart horse home from Fl. But now my Cutter is for sale and not sure what to do? I feel like I am being torn apart between 2 horses
  • He bought Cutter at 500.00 and wants me to pay him 1500.00 for her. The only reason I sold him Cutter was because she was supposed to go to his wife. We are close and because she has ataxia she needed a horse that would just stand there as she mounted. They split like a month after they got her. I am literally crying. I sold her low because they are both on a fixed income. It was a win win because my boys still had access to Cutter for 4h. I am so devastated right now. I love both these horses. Caddo is just a hauling fee to bring him home. I cant do both of them. What would you all do?
  • Is there any reason why he is charging so much more for your horse now? Did it get more training or something? (even if so, not $1000 worth..)

In buy backs you pay the same that you sold the horse for.. I mean, depending on contracts.

Did you have any sale contracts or 4h lease contracts from this? A lot of times it's a nice idea to put in a first right of refusal so that if something happens like this or they go to sell, they have to offer the horse back to you at the same price.

Do you know anyone who has a trailer you can borrow? Or maybe somewhere that you can rent a trailer? Often driving it yourself can be cheaper than paying to haul.

It sounds like a hard decision to try and make. I'm sorry.

(I don't know all the details or the full story, BUT)
If I were in your position, I would try arguing over the price and point out that you were being nice/doing them a favor selling your horse so cheap to them. Maybe also point out that people don't include all the money they've spent on the horse in their sales price, that's not okay, it's not your fault what they spent on the horse (in care, feed, tack, etc.) and is completely irrelevant to this price. Or you could even try the tactic that you are doing them a favor "giving" them their $500 back and taking your horse back, because otherwise they are going to keep having to spend more money on the horse until they find someone who is interested/until it sells.

    Good luck!

  • No I didnt necause we were all friends. His wife is still my best friend. I am so torn. Caddo I want home because he is the one I loved with all of my heart. Cutter would be great for the boys. Caddo should be but wont know until heis home. I am just scared that Cutter may end up at a kill pen or passed around. I thought I was doing right by helping my friends but inthe end I am the one hurting.
  • He is giving me the first right to refuse. No she has had no additional training and the thing is he has an offer on her now. I am so torn by this makes me question if I want to stay in the horses altogether.
  • If they're your friends I am sure they'd be willing to do a payment plan then if they are seriously going to charge you 3X the price you sold him for...

It is tough being in horses, because stuff like this happens all the time sadly. :(

First right of refusal means that before they go to sell the horse they have to offer it back to you at the price that it was sold, aka, a buy back clause. If you chose not to, then they can go on their way and sell to whoever for whatever.
Generally the first right of refusal is just selling you back the horse, and it is ALWAYS (in my entire life of horses) for the same price the horse was sold for OR Less.
What they are doing I would 100% consider wrong - the only thing that would make it "ok" is if the situation was something like an unbroke horse was sold and then bought back after a fair amount of training, but it sounds like this is not the case. (I would like to add that I am in NO WAY trying to be rude or bad mouth, just trying to give you my opinion from my experience.)

If Caddo is pretty broke so that he would even be ok for your kids, you could consider leasing him for a little bit. That way you would have a little extra money to put towards Cutter. And if you did a full lease, then you could have some time to get back on your feet a little between getting Cutter back and bringing Caddo home with just one horse to worry about for a while. Or buy back Cutter and do a lease (the person interested in him would probably be up for it) for a little while to help re-coup the buy back and then Caddo's hauling.

I understand though that after getting you horsies back home, leasing out is probably the LAST thing you want to do after going through all of this! lol :)

  • Caddo hasbeen away from me for several years about 5 years. He is now 7 he is broke just hasnt been rode in ayear much. The girl that got Caddo trained him for barrels. She let her niece do pee wee barrels with him. I am just concerned because he hasnt been rode much.
  • Ohhh... yeah, boy, thats hard :(

I totally understand the draw of the heart horse, do you think you may be able to facilitate a soft landing for Cutter with someone else? I don't mean to sound blunt, but is Cutter worth what he's asking? Like will he easily place her/him in a new home for that?
  • Yes she is actually worth more. I was offered 2500 for her and turned it down. I had no intentions of selling but I have been friends with him and his wife for the last 3 years. We have grown close his wife and I. I did all of Cutters training myself. She is a great kids horse and she has points on her that I put on her showing in the ARHA. Yes we were out ona trail and domeone asked to buy her that day I still owned her at the time.
  • It is a very difficult decision. I just feel like I am going to hurt no matter what I do.
  • Yeah, totally :(

Well! The nice thing is that since she is well trained she has a better chance of finding a good home and sticking with it if you choose Caddo
  • Have you tried telling them that you will buy her back for what you sold her for? A 3x mark up seems a lot if they are wanting to move her. Hope everything works out so you can get both...personally I would get my heart horse back though first as I've made the decision to part with one before and regretted it ever since.
  • I tried that today bit he wont budge on Cutters price. I am leaning more on Caddo. I have nissed him terribly and I know he will ne just as great as Cutter once he has a refresher. I appreciate you all listening.
  • Although I'd never sell my heart horse if I did and was in a similar situation, he would be my choice every time.
I also would never pay 3x as much as I sold the horse for unless it was in a horrible situation and I had the money to get it out of that situation but especially since you just sold her to him I wouldnt do it. This guy doesnt sound like much of a friend. Sorry youre in this situation.
  • The story behind Caddo is my hubby wanted to go to all registered stock and Caddo and his dam were the only 2 that werent registered. Those two were my horses. Cinnamon I taught her how to trust again. I loved her and when she gave me Caddo I never dreamed of giving him to my friend. When hubby wanted all registered stock I let my horses go to friends in Florida. Well my friend who has Caddo told me that she was going to sell him. I asked her if I could get him back. She said yes so I just have to figure out how to get the hauling money and Caddo can come home. We talked almost a month ago about Caddo. Cutters situation just now came up. It hurts but my hubby said for me to make myself happy for once and bring Caddo home instead of Cutter but it still hurts having to sacrifice one for the other.
  • I didnt mean for you to have to explain yourself! I totally understand things happen.
  • I know. I just wanted to. I just appreciate you all listening this has been so hard.
