Initial Showing Score for Yearlings
  • How well my young horses do showing seems to be related to their initial scores, more than PT. Two Gen 2 yearlings with PTs above of 10, both consistent, one has an initial score at the show of 5, one of -1. When I look at the 3 year olds (my oldest homebreds), their overall points are directly related to their initial scores from being a foal. Those who started in the -1 to 2 range seem to continuously end up in the bottom half of their classes. Those with initial scores 3-5 range do much better.
Some of the horses in my show barn from my initial crop have PTs less than 10 and again the three years old with the higher initial good score and PTs in the 9s do better that my horses with higher PTs and lower initial scores. Should I be culling my yearling spays/gelds that I keep for showing based on that initial score, instead of PT,or does it catch up as they get older and higher PT is better?
  • Not in the least. You just have a small sample size. It has never been found to be an issue game wide. The starting score variance is just too tiny.

  • Thanks. I just have an overwhelming urge to analyse any numbers I get and try and look at trends. You are right - small sample sizes can make wrong trends.

So next question - is starting score random or is there a meaning to it?
