Backwards Quality/Papering...
  • I'm just not having the best luck with foals and their papering at the moment, with my latest Hz KP colt which I was SURE would paper Star*, papered A...

He's an evenly bred Gen 9, with Star* and Gold* parents, both even bred too. Worth a breeding boost (which honestly I can't really afford!) or is he a dud? He passed all testing too, so must be a high A...but still lower quality..:/

Happened on a few of my others too, I'm just not sure what I'm doing wrong! I don't know anyone with a G8 Hz KP stallion who I can breed my two KP mares too, and I thought this stallion would be a good match and produce a quality foal with my mare.
I don't know about my fillies, as I can't paper them, but now I'm worried they'll be duds/backwards in quality too!

Because I don't own the stallions (using straws), I can't use the pasture bonus either :(

    Thank you

  • Breeding evenly will in no way boost your foal and make it paper better and will in no way guarantee you a suprior foal. It will mean it is less likely to be significantly worse than sire or dam but that's it. Breeding horses with the same ability is the null state and has no effect. Breeding horses with one parent much higher causes larger more unpredictable swings.
  • That stallion was the only KP one I had at the time that was G8...I thought I was doing the right thing by breeding even generations to try and improve the lines. How can I improve if all it will do is plateau the quality? :( Sorry still consider myself relatively new and learning.

  • The foal is an average of the parents plus a random factor. You still have to get a good random roll.
  • You are doing it right, but, like Ammit mentioned, there is a random element involved. It's like rolling a pair of dice. If you choose two horses who are of similar quality you will get more of a known factor, but there is still a roll of the dice involved. It maybe a little better, or a little worse, or just the same as it's parents.

Small scale breeding, just a handful of horses, means you only get a few rolls of the dice, so getting a superior horse is harder. Larger scale breeding 50-100 horses, increases your chances of getting a nice horse in a shorter period of time, because you get more rolls of the dice. You can do it with small scale breeding, you just need to get lucky, or breed for many, many months.

Maybe you should see if you can borrow a KP stud? Use it for a few months then return it to it's owner. Or see if someone will sell you a stud they have retired.
