Shire project....
  • What colors are shires? I know of black but are their other colors? I have always liked these drafts.
  • This is from the Shire Society website:

Black, brown, bay or grey. No good stallion should be splashed with large white patches over the body. He must not be roan or chestnut.

Hope this helps! Love Shires too
  • I love shires too! Briefly thought about trying to breed my own shire line a couple of days ago, might see what I have that I could work with...

According to the Shire Horse society (you can find their website online), stallions should be black, brown, bay, or grey and must not be roan or chestnut (in the UK; chestnut is allowed in the US), and must not have large amounts of white markings. At least 17 hands at maturity, average is 17.2 (could be a fun challenge ;) ) Mares may be black, brown, bay, grey, or roan, (or chestnut outside the UK), a minimum of 16 hands. Geldings can be the same colours as mares, and a minimum height of 16.2 hands. Then of course the distinctive white markings on face and legs.
  • It does. My dream is to own a shire one day. It would be a lot of fun i think.
  • With that said, on further reading mares and geldings are allowed to be roan, and the US Shire Society accepts chestnuts. Go figure!
  • I think I am just gonna start small with 5 mares and 1 stud.

Finding that blaze and white stockings is gonna be the test.
  • Had a bit of fun with the "search horses" page trying a few combinations. There seems to be a surprising lack of even faintly shire-like drafts! Splash and minimal/light white factor might be worth a try, to get the blaze and stockings?
  • Good idea, Citadel. Looked at some of my splashes, and found some very blaze like markings.

Most of these have a white factor of little or none, but there is one medium why factor in there too. The none white factors seem to have very minimal or no socks. The tricky part is all these have one copy of the splash gene. This will end up with foals without it, and two copies seem to give larger white patterns, which would go into he whole registry regulation against stallions with patches of white.
It doesn't always lead to bases, however, it seems.

Unfortunately, this is my only draft with it, but he has extra genes.

  • I like that stud. I think i may have to look. I know i have my solid black stud but he has no white factor. Right now I have 3 mares that would work but I really need a blaze faced horse and stockings.
  • Here are some that might work for anyone looking for the "Shire". I'll have them up on my chat for sale, so all I need is your ID# to add you, if you haven't been added, to grab them. They will be up for either 2500, if not color tested, or 2600 if color tested. They are Top Notch Producers or Perfect Foundations.

  • Splash is the best way to get stockings and a blaze . you just need to find horses with none, light and minimal white factor

  • Shires don't have to have a white blaze and stockings. They often do, but there are a few pictures of them without that.

The biggest challenge will be finding foundations over 17 hands for the stallions.

I have only one draft stallion that matches the British standard, and he's a 3rd gen.

I breed drafts, but I'm not pushing for any maximum height. If you're interested, we can discuss price. You could breed him to suitable 3rd gen draft mares.

If you want to start from scratch, take the tallest foundation stallions you can get and breed them to tall mares, working for draft stallions of the correct height.

  • How much are you wanting for him?

Right now my blackest stud is 16 2.
  • Does 5000 sound reasonable. He's hand bred, not pasture bred, a 3rd gen B, superior to his sire. At least he's true shire height.
