Two consistent horses = inconsistent?
  • About 20 times, I have bred two consistent horses, only to get an inconsistent horse. Why is this? It really frustrates me. Does anyone have any good inconsistent horses? I have an inconsistent horse that I want to keep... I like him color wise but I am not sure What kind of show horse he could make.
  • It does happen, but dont get rid of them. I have several really good show horses that are inconsistent and they are doing fine for me. Honestly I no longer test for consistence so I can save some money. I can tell pretty quick once they start showing if they are inconsistent or not. I just keep an eye on them. Also, if you breed an inconsistent horse, you can still get a consistent foal, so if you like the horse and it works for your breeding program, then keep it.
  • I am pretty sure I am not the only one... I pay zero attention to consistency, personally. Well, maybe not zero, I check on show horses =sometimes=. But close to zero. Inconsistent horses can make you a bunch of money with the new showing system, where all that matters is points. Maybe not quite as much as a very consistent horse, but it seems irrelevant to me. For me, if it doesn't matter that much for my show horses, it matters less for my breeding stock. Very occasionally it will be the tipping factor on whether I keep this colt or that colt.
  • I am another one that doesn't fuss much about consistency. The one place where this is annoying me is when I am interested in calculating a mare's average foal PT score, and one of the foals is inconsistent. PT is affected by consistency, so one inconsistent foal can make it harder to figure out if a mare is producing well. For a player that is avoiding inconsistency, having it affect PT is helpful. If you're like me and don't care about consistency, then it is kind of a pain.

The only place I am a little pickier about consistency is looking at studs. If I am on the fence about a colt, I'll test consistency, but I wouldn't get rid of an otherwise really nice colt on the basis of inconsistency.
  • Why does it happen? Because every horse's consistency factor is set by the roll of a virtual die (that is, by a random number generator). It doesn't really matter what the score was for the parents. I don't know the full range possible, but it starts at 0 and goes up from there. I've had horses, back when I was showing by hand and tracking it, before the consistency test came in, whose showing scores might vary by up to ten points in a single week. If I'm remembering correctly.

  • So you all think I should keep him? And is breeding an inconsistent horse ok?

Here's the guy I'm talking about:

  • breeding an inconsistent horse is ok. Like Double T Stables said, you can get consistent foals out of an inconsistent mare or stud. The thing with inconsistent is that they vary in their showing, sometimes they can be on a good run when they are on their high part of their consistency, and sometimes they can be horrible, in their lower part of their consistency, but either way, they are still getting points, unless they hit dead last, so no matter where they come in they are still making you money, and can breed better than themselves (or worse), just like any regular Consistent horse.

I don't even worry about consistency, because to me it's all about where they land when they level up, to make sure they are at lest not dead last, so they can still make money for me.
  • Good to know! Good to know! I'm not even gonna test for it anymore now haha thanks guys!!
  • That he is Inconsistent doesn't matter, but I would never ever breed him, as he is a C papered 2nd gen. I only keep high B 2nd gens (a B that is Superior to another B). Breeding a C 2nd gen will not keep your lines improvisasjon, as it is the same as his sire.

  • I've always wondered why the default for the consistency test gelds them if consistency doesn't matter for breeding.
  • Hmm I thought inconsistent horses had a higher probability of having inconsistent offspring.
  • Inconsistent horses do have more chance of inconsistent foals, but they can still have a consistent foal. Back in HJ1 horses used to get really badly inconsistent, they aren't as bad now because the worst have been weeded out by the consistency testing spaying and gelding them! I don't ignore inconsistency, but I don't often test for it either, I test stallions and any intact foals that got an unusually low PT score. The PT is a calculated from a combination of things, consistency being one of them so very inconsistent horses are likely to have low PT's. If you keep breeding inconsistent horses together, you will likely see an decrease over time in PT and an increased inconsistency. Neither of which you really want in a showing or breeding program. Breeding an odd inconsistent horse isn't going to affect much though
  • Yeah I was thinking I wouldnt breed him or inconsistent horses but sometimes you get a good shower that is inconsistent with some good genes and that can be hard to pass up.
